Arthritis and Meloxicam

Ozzie was favoring his back legs for half a year, the left one sometimes then the right one.
He could only stand for his morning brushing for a few minutes then he layed down. Ozzie is eleven.
So I took him to his vet. The vet thinks he has arthritis and prescribed .6cc/day of Meloxicam.
Meloxicam works- Ozzie is now pain free.

But this is not curing him. Lots of vets think Meloxicam harms cats.
The vet asked to see Ozzie after a week for a blood test. Everything came back normal
The prescription and the recommended dose on the Meloxicam website is for .6 cc per day.
I give Ozzie .3 cc per day after the blood test and Ozzie is still pain free. I dont want my cat to get CRF.
So what can I give my cat to cure the arthritis and get off Meloxicam?
I have the blood test results.

Have you tried supplementing with glucosamine and chondroitin (such as Cosequin or Dasaquin)? Green lipped mussel extract and/or omega3 fatty acids are other options (check out Glyco-flex).

My cat has done great with a combo of osteopathy treatments and acupuncture. He also has a heated pet bed. A better pain med option is Buprenex (Buprenorphine), although it's also more expensive and some vets are reluctant to prescribe it because it's not so easy to get.

I forgot, one more thing to ask your vet about is Adequan or Cartrophen injections.

Are Cosequin or Dasaquin vet only?

I'm not much into "home remedies"

Are the Adequan or Cartrophen injections bid or sid?

Thank you for the reply.

Not sure what you mean by that.

With Adequan, you get an initial series of injections once a week for 4 weeks, then approximately once a month or as needed. I think it's similar for Cartrophen, but I've never used it.

Were xrays taken to determine the cause of the limping/pain?

This is the same schedule for Cartrophen which I have used on my last dog, it is labelled for use in dogs only but I know it has been used off-label for cats & horses.

No xray. I'll ask for one.
Home remedies = extract of bluefish livers from the Upper Nile, gall bladder essence from a rocky mountain green eyed goat.

We had our Gunnar xrayed and definite arthritis...using
previcox now but vet did suggest Sasha's blend which I am going to pick up today.
It is only distributed thru vets but it not prescription....
www.sashasblend.com Seems like a better alternative if
it does what it proclaims....someone here was recommending it on another thread the other day.

Got an xray. His right ball and socket is degraded and his left pelvis to spine as well. The vet said they are not bad yet.

@ SCM got some glucosamine and chondroitin spray.

I see home remedies as more along the lines of heating pads and hot/cold compresses or perhaps something like butter for hairballs. They can be quite effective. I guess I'm wondering what it is you have against them, like if it's just that you'd rather not do anything without your vet's approval (valid) or if you think they don't work (not necessarily valid).

Thanks for the update. Considering 80-90% of cats age 12 and over have some degree of arthritis, that's not terribly unusual. Hopefully the glucosamine/chondroitin will help cushion Ozzie's joints a bit (what's the spray called, if you don't mind me asking?).

NutriAid GCM 2.5 ml/ day to start then half.

My kitten Pauli was very interested in the smell of the bottle.

Hopefully this stuff wont hurt Pauli- he bulls his nose in Ozzies bowl if he figures Ozzie has better food.
