Guess what? The Slippery Elm Bark is not working.

The canned Wellness food is not working.

Still no poop. What is Blue's next step.

I'm so sorry I was going to suggest medi-cal high fiber wet food but I see you already tried that. It's the only thing that worked with a cat I had years ago.

Are you giving him the cisipride and lactulose regularly?......trying to get him to excercise is also important, if you don't have a yard to walk him, walk him around the house....If he will eat any canned food regardless of the make mixed with water. If he doesn't like it watered down, I suggest you give water with a syringe....Once he is unblocked with the right meds and some exercise, it should continue coming....I feel for you, I have this happen with my older boy every year when the weather changes, we've been dealing with it for 5 or 6 years now.

I love Chris's idea of exercise, just like it gets your colon working, it can with your cat. too There are many blood vessels that flow to the colon and when they get active so does the colon.

Can you take him outside on a leash and harness and get him to run??? Is there any favourite toy that he will run for?

Oh yes, and lots of water.

It appears from what you are saying that poor kitty who was already suffering from severe constipation when you last posted on the 25th has still not gone 5 days later even with stool softeners, meds, herbs and home enemas. I would say it is time for a trip to the vet. As I said in an earlier post, sometimes fecal material can become severely impacted and hard as concrete. From what you said in an earlier post this has happened before and it may have happened again.

If it has gotten to this stage, anything taken orally will be of little benefit as it will do nothing for the hardened, impacted stool in the lower colon and you say enemas have already been tried more than once. He may very likely also be suffering from dehydration at this point. Dehydration can be a contributing factor in constipation and severe constipation will cause further dehydration. What the vet may have to do is rehydrate him using IV or subq's and manually evacuate some of the hardened stool while kitty is under anesthetic. This is a delicate procedure that has to be performed under anethetic by a vet. If severe constipation is left too long it can cause further complications.

The suggestions given to you are very good and may be very helpful to prevent this from happening in the future but, unless I am not understanding what you are saying about the current situation, I would say a vet visit is in order.

I agree with mikischo. A trip to the vet to be cleaned out sounds like the best thing. After that keep him on his new diet with the slippery elm, give him extra water either with his food or syringed gently into the side of his mouth, and make sure he is getting exercise. Try tying a piece of string to your belt loops and walking around the house. I don't know any kitty who doesn't like that. Exercise is key along with everything else.
Good luck.

Mikischo is right on the money, if Blue has not been pooping for several days he needs vet help at this point. Unfortunately chronic constipation can lead to megacolon, which is an extremely frustrating and scary condition to deal with. I hope it hasn't come to that. http://www.vin.com/proceedings/Proce...6622&O=Generic
