Abcessed microchip
Anyone else ever have this happen, your dog (or cat) developes an abcess around it's microchip. One of my dogs did (of course she is one of our show dogs ) and she is at the vet today getting it removed. She was on antibiotics for a month for something else and the vet said it would clear up the chip problem too, but last week it came back. So I said enough is enough, it's coming out! The vet will remove the old chip, clean out the infected area, and implant a new one. He suspects that a piece of skin and some hair went in with the chip when it was implanted, and now it is festering. I pick her up this afternoon when they call, (guess I'd better get off the net) and hopefully she does not look too bad, I have plans to take her to another show in 3 weeks!
Anyone else heard of this??

I've never heard of it happening but it is something I've wondered about myself.

Well... got to the vet yesterday to pick Trixi up and it turns out that the abcess had nothing to do with the chip after all . So at least I do not have to worry about added costs of another chip and the hassle I would get from the kennel club when I tell them I have to change the id number on a dog, who knows what that would have involved, possible dna tests, letters from the vet...etc.
Anyways, the vet suspects that she had a puncture at some point that pushed hair and skin into her neck, I have no idea how that would have happened, but that is their only guess. There was a trail of hair under her skin, along with some wild flesh that had developed because of the minor infection, that was the lump. Even though that is also where the chip registered, it is located an inch or two behind the spot. So, for whatever reason, our dogs seem to enjoy going to the vet, each of our GSP's has had some odd thing happen that required anesthesia and x-rays or surgery, . Kera, had an abcessed tooth that created a lump of bone on the side of her face under her eye, this required anesthesia, x-rays and antibiotics. Blue got in a fight with our foster and had a puncture wound on his chest, this also required anesthesia, x-rays and antibiotics. Then Trixi with her strange abcess. Then there was both Blue and Trixi getting diagnosed with Lyme disease this spring, even though we vaccinate! Some days I really feel like giving up, no wonder we are in dept, I have to find a job

Your dog's must be related to my dogs!! If a month goes by and we haven't been to my Vet or any number of specialists I check my pulse to make sure I'm still on the planet!!
"Glad" to hear it was a freakish thing rather than the chip. My understanding is that the incidence of problems related to chip implants is very rare. I'd hate to think it might deter anyone from getting a chip. I wonder if there might have been some doggy rough-housing that resulted in the puncture ~ perhaps there was so little blood loss it went unnoticed. |

I've never heard of it either. And I guess since in wasn't the chip, I still haven't I hope she heals up well.

Anyways, thanks for the well-wishes, I was off to the vet AGAIN today, for Trixi. This morning when I let the dogs out I noticed her incision was swollen, and not just the cut line, but the whole top of her neck
So... hi ho, hi ho, off to the vet again we go. I was afraid of infection, even though she is on meds, you know how these dogs are, and I didnt want any lasting effect since she is a show dog. Turns out it was fluid. When the Dr. cut out all the wild tissue it left a hole, since stitching the hole together would have caused a "pucker" on the top of her neck, something you dont really want in a show dog, he decided to leave it and let it heal. So now it filled with fluid and he had to drain it, the poor dog. I have to keep her in the house and apply warm compresses and massage the spot several times a day to prevent it from filling again. If it does happen again, I will have to return and have him put in a drain tube, . The nice thing was that I think the vet felt bad for me being there the 2nd time in 4 days, so he didnt charge me for todays visit,

Abscess from microchip
I got our puppy Got microchipped a few days after we got him and he now has a bad abscess. He's been to the vet three times because of it and has had to be put to sleep to operate on it. I was wondering how many people have had this problem. It's been a tough thing to clear up and we are still working on it three-weeks later. He isn't a show dog or anything, we rescued hm, but I'm still concerned about what he's had to go through to get over this.
This is our first puppy in 18 years so we are feeling like new parents. We got him after our previous dog passed away from cancer. |

Microchip abscess?
My standard poodle got a microchip when she was spayed--at about 6 months old. Now she's 5 years old, and I wanted to check to see whether the microchip company had my correct contact information. So I had the vet scan her, and they couldn't find the chip ANYWHERE on her body!
After about 8 hours of contemplation, one thing occurred to me: about 2 years ago, Sophie (the poodle) had an abscess on the back of her neck, below her collar. It kept scabbing over, then bursting. I finally squeezed it like it was a giant zit or boil, then irrigated it with Bactine, then kept it slathered in anti-biotic ointment. This time, it scabbed over, then the scab dried up and fell off--Voila! No more abscess. Could that incident have been the microchip working its way out of her body? And now, should I have a second one put in? She is a beautiful, show-quality dog. I do worry about someone trying to steal her. But maybe her body just rejects foreign objects! And this time there would be no anaesthetic.... |

It's definitely a concern you should bring up with your vet before having another chip put in, Legalrodent.
Sometimes the chips migrate, too--when that happens, they can show as anomalies on x-rays. Of course, even though the chip remains with the dog in that case, it's useless as a tool since you can't know where to scan.
