Is everyone ready for the seed trade?
Just wondering if everyone is ready for the seed trade now?
My Echinacea may not be ready, it's hard to tell. We had a really hard frost last week and I lost a lot of late flowering seeds. Many are mushy. But I did get some other stuff saved, about 6 types of flowers. And we have donations coming in from people who do not want to trade, but are providing seeds. Any questions - feel free to ask. You can put the seeds into teeny tiny plastic zip bags, they should be available at your local dollar stores in the craft section. Or cut up bits of paper to make tiny seed envelopes. There are tons of templates online you can print out. Remember to label! A little slip of paper is easiest when using the plastic bags. As to the amount of seeds - well I figure most people have small gardens. So I will venture to say that a measuring teaspoon of tiny seeds is more than enough (like Poppy seed size) and 10-15 larger seeds (Hollyhock seed size) is plenty to share with each person. I did a simple web search on Startpage.com and got these results for seed envelopes. http://theseedsite.co.uk/envelope.html http://www.blossomswap.com/envelopes.html

I have been working on seeds for the last few weeks. Don't have tons but I am sure I could put 20 or so in pkgs. Normally that is lots to trade.
I will be ready with a list of what I have available prob next week some time. I have a project on the go at the moment I need to get finished.

Scrounge around with your family, friends and neighbors! Beg, plead and steal!
One of my friends "stole" some really nice dark burgundy Hollyhock seeds that he saw on someone's property while there for a garage sale. Then he asked after just to make sure. I am hoping he will get some of his seeds together for the trade too. He has a killer TALL white Marigold (Tagetes). He gave me a head of seeds already but Jasper scattered the whole head all over the house. Guess he thought it was some new toy and nabbed it off the kitchen table when I wasn't looking. But it's really up to you what you want to do. I've done other trades in the past and received commercial seed packs.

I recommend (but not a hard rule, share whatever you want)
Tiny seeds = one teaspoon Large seeds = 10-15 seeds For the mid range size, make a guesstimate! Well personally I prefer perennials, but some annuals are good too as space fillers. If you get something you're not too crazy about, it's a good opportunity to give to someone else! Especially someone that has a new garden or is just starting out.

Calendula may self seed? It does, but it's not really invasive in my opinion. But it definitely self seeds! And I welcome it personally. It has so many uses. And it's edible. Back as far as the Iron Age, it was eaten, thus one of its names "Pot Marigold" because it was meant for the cooking pot.
I received two medium size freezer bags FULL of two colors of Hollyhock seeds for this trade. There must be over 10,000 seeds in there! One is a "black" type, and I can't remember the other color. OK so I need everyone to say if they want to participate, then I'll PM you all my address. Then you send the stuff in a bubble envelope with an extra label and postage and the envelope will be reused to mail it back to you. The $1.15 Canadian stamps should work, unless you plan on sending a lot. If the trade is done from a central location then it saves everyone postage trading among several individuals. So you take your seeds and package in as many tiny envelopes for each person in the trade. Then I split everything up and mail back. Of course, if you guys don't want to do the central trade you can trade with each other. But I'm offering my time to do this if you all want. For me I definitely want some of that purple perennial Salvia, Coreopsis, and Black Eyed Susans. I picked a bunch of Grape Hyacinth seeds too!

Oh forgot to add, I looked at the Hollyhock seeds I received, and one pack is labeled a black single and the other is a red double flower (more frilly than the single).

So does anyone know where the seeds are in a black eyed susan? Mine have died off and the brown centre is left. It looks like it may hold seeds?

The black hollyhocks that I sent you CearaQC may be more of a really really dark purple, but they look black when they're open. Just so nobody is disappointed! Good luck with the seed trade. Have fun.

Winston - the brown parts if you open the seed head will fall out. They are the seeds. Sorry it took so long to answer.
Unfortunately there does not seem to be a lot of interest in the seed trade. I have an alternate idea. How about we list what we have available and if anyone is interested in some of the seeds they PM us with what they want and their address. We could send the seeds to them and, if we want, the person who wanted the seeds could reimburse for postage. I have most of my list already posted. I have to go through it to see if there is anything to add. But feel free to PM me if you are interested in any seeds. Thanks all.
