Exclamation Origen - if you feed it read this post!! Manufacturer Problem

I have been buying Origen for our Jade for a few months now and most recently bought the adult formula and I was quite surprised when I found bones in the kibble. I have spoken with Champion foods and they lady on the phone knew right away, she confirmed that they were bits of fish bones. The supplier of the fish was using a larger screen than Champion had agreed and subsequently some larger size bone bits got into the food. She said the only concern was for smaller dogs who could choke on the bits. It only affect 1 batch "LOT 82660" in both adult and 6 fish (she didn't specifically say cat, senior or puppy formulas). They are not pulling these batches of the shelves. Anyways, make your own decision, just to let you know. Here are some pics of the kibble I found and the back of the bag. She said I could return the bag to my store for a refund or replacement.

Geez... I think that if there is a possibility of smaller dogs choking that lot should be pulled. Plus fish bones are sharp are they not?

I usually feed a mix of Canidae and Orijen adult, but I they were out so I got large breed puppy this time. I checked it and it's fine. I looked for the lot number but when I opened the bag I must have cut it off.

The size of the kibble isn't really big enough to have a bone that could choke somebody, I don't think. I've checked mine, they seem fine .

I didn't realize bones were a part of the ingredients.

I agree and the kibble is not as big as the picture shows.....the largest piece that I checked is about 3/8 inch in diameter.

Bone isn't listed as an ingredient but their fish or chicken doesn't say it's deboned so obviously they are ground up with the fish. The OP stated that the fish supplier used a larger screen than was agreed upon so that's how the larger pieces of bone slipped through.

I love Orijen.. don't get me wrong. I just wouldn't be comfortable feeding kibble that has bones poking out of it.. I'd swap it out for another bag with a different lot number.

I think that bones are not listed, but fish meal is. Which means bones + meat I believe.

The kibble size is under an inch for sure, the largest bone piece I pulled out of the kibble bit (shown in the picture removed) was about 1cm long and was the biggest piece I found. That is what caught my eye.

Yes, she stated the the screen used was bigger than agreed and that is how the larger bone bits got into the food. Not sure how they became aware of the situation - if the food went out anyways or it was brought to their attention after the fact.

No, the lady on the phone was not that concerned with it, she stated they did some research and determined was not a risk, but they would be worried about smaller dogs. IMO - my concern was not for choking but for the damage that this sharp bone (specifically the large piece I found) could possibly cause my dog from end to end. So far so good with her, no signs of anything. She only ate 2 meals from this bag.

Any type of "meal" contains bone, some in varying degrees. Normally you wouldn't see pieces of it, due to the grinding and screening.
I don;t think it's really a big deal, unless you are worried about choking. Swapping it out for another bag is a great option.

Does that date code say exp June 08? This food was made almost 1 year ago?
If so, I wonder if the store needs to check the date codes, it's kinda short dated IMHO. it takes me a while to get through those size bags!

I think it says Best before June 10 2009. Although I'm squinting to read it.

I am on my second bag of Orijen. 1st was senior and didnt have any problems. This one is adult (They were out of the adult the first time and spoke to champion pet foods which stated that the only difference between the two formulas is that more 30% of calories come from fat in the adult and 25% of calories come from fat in the senior, and there are less calories per cup in the senior). I have not noticed any bones in my bag, but I am on the lookout. My bag expires in April 2009.

Thanks

I returned that bag to same store where I bought it to exchange for another one, but all of them were from the same batch. Also, they were out of the fish formula so I ended up buying a different food (sigma 7), which Jade seems to like a lot better, so I might keep feeding that instead.

DoodleMan - I'm glad your food was fine, it's a really great food that a lot of dogs seem to like. I hope this is the end of their processing issues.

Hi, thought you might be interested in the following:

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_f...ype=1&si=sigma

It provides detailed reviews of three 'Sigma 7' dog food varieties... IMO Orijen is in a different class from this food. Take a look on that website, there are various grain-free and other foods available that IMO are better then Sigma 7.
