Cats and aspirin
Has any one ever given their cat low dose aspirin on a long term basis? Our 12 yr old cat was diagnosed with a heart condition, along with a few other things. The vet is going to put her on a heart med, plus high blood pressure med. He is considering aspirin, also, but said it could be bad for her long term, he's not sure if he wants to do it. Has anyone had their cat on long term aspirin, and was there any major problems with it.?

I have always heard that both Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Aspirin (ASA) are toxic to cats. As always, curious what other members think about this.

Cats can take very small amounts of aspirin. When a 6 week old kitten we had came down with an upper respiratory infection the Vet said I was to give him 1/8th of a baby aspirin. Yeah, you try it, all you end up with is dust.
My understanding is that with the extremely small amounts that are a safe amount for a cat your concern is still the same as it is for us and dogs, stomach irritation with long term use. I only had to dose it for about two weeks. You'd be amazed how hard a tiny little kitten can bite when you ram your aspirin dust coated finger into the back of his throat in hopes enough dust transfers to be a therapeutic dose. |

Picked Ruby up today, and talked to the vet about the aspirin. He wants to wait until shes better before he considers it, right now she has a UTI, ear infections, is constipated plus arthritis in the back. Shes going to have to be on heart meds and high blood pressure meds for good.
I had read about giving a cat that has heart disease the enzyme Lumbrokinase, the product is called L-R Zyme. Its supposed to help prevent clotting. He said hes going to check it out before I return to him in two weeks. |
