My New Rescue Dog

Hi, I've posted a few times in the past few months...just wanted to share pics of my new rescue dog. I've only had him about 3 months now and he's just great! I think he's a flat coated retriever cross, but the rescue foundation i adopted him from had him listed as both a newfie x and a husky/shepherd/golden ?? I actually think he might have some hound in him too. He bays when he barks and has an incredible nose. He's about 75 lbs. I hope I attached the picture right!

What a gorgeous pup! Congrats! Did you have any problems with your rescue? Please share your trials and tribulations as this may shed light on rescues and the animals that they save. Your experience would be wonderful to listen to.

The reason I ask is because many people have the wrong impression about rescue or shelter animals. It's always interesting to hear about people's experience and it just may touch someone reading.

Thanks for all the comments and compliments guys! I love him sooo much. He's the first dog I've owned by myself (the rest were family dogs) and I was a little nervous getting a dog but he is just wonderful.

We have had a few issues to work through, but I've had the help of an amazing dog trainer. Ranger is food-protective, but only with people. It's like he'd been abused in the past when eating so now is a little reactive if people interrupt him (reactive as in will growl and snap). He's never done it with me and I was completely clueless until I had friends over and they walked between him and his food dish. BUT I have been working on this with exercises given to me by the trainer and he's shown huge improvement with people being around his food. He's always been fine with anyone coming up and taking his toys or bones - even right out of his mouth, it's just his food.

He's very calm in the house and only needs about 2-3 walks a day. He rarely plays inside, only outside and he's never jumped up on people or furniture. He also LOVES kids. Stops on our walks to see children and try to go over to get pets. His favorite part of our walk is when we go by the playground.

My dog trainer also has me doing exercises to gain his respect. It's not about dominance, just respect. Since doing these exercises, Ranger listens way better to commands. His foster mom had him for a week and told me he didn't know how to sit. I tested him over and over and he never sat - until I was holding cheese in my hand. Then he couldn't sit quickly enough. He's very smart in a "clever, sneaky" kind of way.

I'll attach another pic...we've made so much progress in the last three months. He was a good dog when I got him, but with the help of this dog trainer, he's turned into an amazing dog!
