What should I feed my cat?

Hello all, I read this forum often and my impression is that most people here have put in a lot of time and effort to find out which foods are the best for their pets, so I have a question for you!

I just got back from the vet where I was reminded that I am feeding my cat cheap, unhealthy food. I am ready to make a switch and invest more money into her food. I just don't know which food to buy.

The vet recommended Eukanuba, Royal Canin or Science Diet dry food along with Vet T/D or Medical Preventive wet food.

Now, I'm pretty sure I've read in this forum that these foods, while more expensive and often recommended by vets, are not actually much better than grocery store brands. Is this true?

What are your top 3 cat food recommendations? Should I always be feeding my cat a combination of wet and dry food?

Thank you kindly for all your input!

Well, the best cat foods are ones that your cat will eat and that you can afford (although nutrition is a "pay me now or pay me later" kinda thing). I personally wouldn't feed any dry food if at all possible, there is absolutely no reason for cats to eat dry. The brands I feed most often are Wellness, By Nature Organics, Innova EVO 95% meat, Nature's Variety Instinct, and Precise. These don't have by-products and are mostly grain-free (except the Precise, which is still low-carb anyway). Occasional cans of gluten-free Fancy Feast are okay for a little variety. I second sugarcatmoms' suggestions & avoid @ all costs the vet prescription foods & their related brand companies.

Here, here!
Get rid of the dry - it's useless, and pretty much any wet food is better for your kitty in the long run than dry.
