Do I need to take him to a vet???

Not sure what to do...Yesterday I was playing with my 4 month old pup in the hallway (it's capreted), we were playing fetch...After I got tired I noticed blood satins on the carpet, I checked his paws and discovered that on both of his front paws he injured(not sure what it's called) the soft ball above his paw...On one of his paws all the skin is completely off and on the other there half of it is in a form of a flap. He never let me know that this even happened, I cleaned them both with dilluted hydrogen peroxide and bandeged it up. He removed the bandages right away so I put a band aid on instead. It held on pretty well, now I'm not sure how I'll get the bandaid off since it's stuck to his hair and not sure if I shoud take him to a vet...It's not bleeding anymore and he walks fine on his paws...Please help!!!!!!!!!!!

it's probably not serious, but you can probably CALL the vet and speak to a vet-tech about at home care.

take the bandaid off - just do it best you can - you don't want that sticking to his fur much longer. don't use bandaids in the future.

GREAT that you cleaned it up! I would simply use a WARM clean facecloth and gently pat the area, let it air dry, then put a DAB of antibacterial ointment on. it's ok if the pup licks it off, just using a dab won't harm him if licked off. BUT do try to keep him distracted for a few minutes at first.

keep an eye on the scrapes, if they AT ALL look oozy - or red and puffy - or it's obvious the pup is distressed, go right into the vet. it's ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry.

be sure to keep both scrapes clean - simply dab w/ a warm clean cloth and air dry as much as you need to.

ETA - no need to cover the scrapes. they will heal much faster if exposed to fresh air. just be careful of the boo-boo's till they are all healed up. :-)

ETA - again... i'm not a vet. simply my own at-home practical advice. if you're unsure, please, DO go see your vet. a professional is always best.

thank you for the advice...should I not take him outside until it heals since the streets are filled with salt and I can imagine it will be very painful for him if the salt get into his cuts?

well is there any other place outside you can take him? grassy or snowy areas? I'd still take him out - put some antibacterial ointment on the scrapes prior to going out - it should act as a barrier temporarily. then, once back inside, clean the scrapes w/ warm water, and air dry. pups get all sorts of boo-boo's... just like kids. unless it's a serious injury, I'd stick to your normal routine.

I'm sure it has something to do with all the salt on the roads and sidewalks lately with all this ice and snow. Be sure when you return from outside to clean the paws and pads gently with luke warm water then pat dry.

Best thing is a pan of luke warm water then pat dry with a tea towel (nothing with a lot of fleece or loops).

I'm pretty sure it's severe carpet burn because when we play fetch he slides on the carpet with his front paws, I'm just concerned for infection mainly and suprised that he didn't let me know that he was hurt and that he just continued on and on even though he was bleeding all over the place.

Don't worry, puppies heal fast

Yes, it's carpet burn.

The same happened to my dog when he was a puppy. The thick skin on one of those knob above his paw was hanging by a thread. I gave him some anti-biotic ointment and taped back in with a band-aid. Overnight, I couldn't even tell which paw he has injured with the band-aid chewed off.

Can someone reccomend an antibiotic ointment, I'm assuming polysporn is not the right choice?
His is a little more serious as on one of the knobs-the skin is completely off, nothing I can put back, just flesh exposed. Hoping it will heal fast with no issues...

yup, that should be fine. I use a generic brand triple antibiotic - same stuff I'd use for myself. Just be sure to use a small amount, as it will most likely be licked off rather quickly.

ok, maybe I'll stop by at shoppers and ask a pharmacist what he would use on an animal...maybe he'll recommend something else

Polysporin is safe to use for dogs but as jessi76 said, it is cheaper to buy the generic brand. Good luck....I hope his feet heal quickly.

I have used polysporin original on dogs before but only if you can supervise them when you have it on.

We use Fucidin on him last time. You may need a Rx for this. Panalog is antibiotic ointment for pets. You can get some from your vet and keep in your first-aid kit.

I purchased the life antibiotic ointment and he held off licking it for about 20 min and than it was all gone. He is constantly licking the area and it's not forming a scab because of that. I'm a little concerned, I want the cuts to close because as long as they're open he can get an infection. Should I buy him a cone?
