Broken Bones
8month old m. German Shepherd/LabX broke his leg 3-4 months ago....at the joint on his right paw. Q: is it still possible to fix? w/ or w/o surgery? Obviously costly...but an estimate? Has anyone dealt with this kind of situation?

3-4 months ago? Can you please elaborate on what has been happening up to this point?
When Corky broke his leg, he was approx. 9 mos old and it was after hours. (He had leapt out of my mom's arms onto the kitchen floor) We immediately took him to an emergency vet who stabilized his leg and gave him pain medication. The next morning, we took him to our vet. Both bones were broken above the paw. Our vet did surgery to put in a pin to secure the bones and Corky was in a cast for about 8-9 weeks. I don't remember exactly how long now. During that time, we took him in twice to have the cast removed and the bone Xrayed to determine how it was healing. He had a total of 3 casts before it was finally removed for the last time. After it was removed, we had to prevent him from jumping up or down for 10 days until he could regain some strength in his paw. Mom kept him on a leash close to her the whole time. The total cost was a little over $600. Our vet was wonderful. Corky doesn't have any limp whatsoever. |

I don't really understand,he broke his leg 3 months ago
Did you just get him now??? Or has he been with you all this time with a broken leg?? I am pretty sure they can still set his leg,but just like with people,it would have to be re-broken,involving surgery.. Either way it has to be done,I am certain he is in pain and it will only get worse as he grows to full size, please have it fixed now, look for a vet or veterinary school, who would do the procedure at a lower cost.if money is the problem, but please do it yesterday.

Can you please clarify if this dog has been to the vet at all. If not if you broke your leg would you wait 3 or 4 months to see a doctor. How has the poor dog been walking and surviving the pain. Before I say anything else please tell me this dog has seen a vet.

I am kinda of concerned MAJ, can you please elaborate on your dog's conditions and how long it's been this way?

Ok calm down everyone... lets not jump to bad conclusions - maybe this person is trying to help/rescue a dog they know about - or is dealing with a bad vet or something. Lets find out more before we all get upset.... There really isn't enough info to jump to any conclusions.
MAJ we need to know - how the dog broke it's leg, how badly it was broken, and what has been done for the dog up to this point. Has the dog been to vet and what was the verdict there? |

I also am trying not to react negatively and not jump to any conclusions. I tried to describe our experience with Corky, answer what questions I could, and show that treatment can have very positive outcome. I'm really concerned that MAJ hasn't come back. Most of all, I'm concerned about this poor pup that needs help desperately. Having gone through this with Corky, I remember only too well how he cried with pain. Why hasn't MAJ responded with our requests for more information? No one is jumping on the bandwagon. We just want to understand this pup's situation to be able to offer help.
Cyberkitten, thanks for your concern about Corky. He's great! This was about a year and a half ago. He just celebrated his 2nd birthday Sunday. |

I love this forum as it is obvious that you all love animals as much as I love my baby (Hercules) When he was 3 months he (in his clumsy puppy way) jumped up and landed on his right hind leg. He immediately began yelping and was not putting any weight on that leg at all. Hubby thought he just pulled a muscle but I took him to the vet and sure enough he had a spiral fracture. I have a great vet and cost was way less than I had expected; although I would have paid anything to make him better. Yes they see me coming all right! Friends make fun of me and say I am too overprotective of him but I don't care. When you take on a pet it is a family member and I would do anything that was in his best interest. Now Herc is doing great although I fear for him having future problems with that leg (he is in great shape and a perfect weight but a very big dog (taller than me when he is upright) although now he has a new problem (bump on hind leg) Sorry to ramble but it is great to share with others who feel the same way about their animals as I do. I'd like to give Maj the benefit of the doubt; perhaps he/she was inquiring out of concern about someone else's dog. I feel for this poor pup and truly hope he has been looked after by a vet.

I actually did not jump to conclusions,I asked if maybe she got this dog now, could have been a rescue,or a friends dog.I wish people would elaborate and tell us the facts, otherwise all kinds of awful pictures enter my mind sad
Well, she's not back,so maybe she just wanted to make us upset, who knows,it happens sad

My Marley- Maj
My pup broke his leg trying to climb under a small counter when he was a baby. Hes now 8months. He walks on three legs, he obviously hasn't the balance of a healthy dog, but he gets around quite well considering. He only cried of pain when he has been playing roughly with other dogs or falls down..( I know you must have tears running down your face, i do) Until now, i haven't had the money to fix him. That is the only reason he is still suffering. I know he is, I suffer with him, I cry when he does, and do my best to help him around when he needs. I dont abuse him. He is very well taken care of. I never posted this to hurt anyone, this is all true. My inquiry was about getting an idea of the $ required to fix him. I've called the vet., and the visit is about 60$ and the x-rays a little over 100$ this is no problem. My worry is he would have to stay over-night, (1000$), surgery costs...etc. They won't give him back to me unless they're paid in full. If I had a credit card, this would have been done the day he broke it, unfortunatly, im too young for one! About a yr. ago, the was a man whose dog was run over by a car, he survived with only a broken leg. This cost 1000$ to fix. The man hadn't the money for the vet, so he wrote to the paper. They kept his dog at a kennel place until they were paid. I dont want them to take my puppy!Im worried that marley's injury will come down to that, I just dont have the money....
thank you everyone for your concern.... I can be reached directly >>>>marissa_jim_05@hotmail.com if you have any ideas for me. But please, don't make me feel anymore guilt than i already do... -MAJ |

There are a couple of groups that offer financial support for people with pet emergencies. I have never used one myself, but I am sure that a couple of people will be able to point you in the right direction without making you feel any worse then you already do.

I totally understand that you feel bad because your dog is in pain, but why won't you at least give him to someone who can help him?
I am not trying to make you feel bad, trust me, but you said it yourself, your dog is suffering, please be fair to him... take him to the vet, let them keep him and try like heck to get the money while he's there, you're gonna feel better in the long run... don't waste any more time! The longer you wait, the more it's going to cost and then that's more money you're gonna have to come up with. |

The first step would be to get an x-ray done. It is possible that the vet may not want to do anything with the leg at this time.
Example..............We found a dog that had a fractured knee and a fractured hip. It was estimated to be ~6mths of age and the leg had healed in a fixed position (no one actually knows how long this dog was wandering with these fractures). After x-rays, it was deceided that the leg was to be removed. In the meantime, the dog was placed on Metacam. The day of the surgery, another x-ray was taken (to make sure there was no change). On comparing the rads, a change was noticed. The rads were taken to an orthopedic specialist for a consult.....................The specialist confirmed that there was no reason for the leg to come off, as sificient healing had occured. However the dog does have to stay on metacam and it is always a possibility that the amputation may have to occur down the road. (this dog was adopted by a great veterinarian) The reason for leg not being re-broke, pinned and set, is the age of the dog. A young pup has growth plates. In reality, the cost all depends on the type of fracture. Some dogs get splinted and do very well with cage rest and pain management. Some have to be pinned, rods etc. Some have to be amputated. Depending on how long it's left and what healing has occured dictates the route to go. The only real way of knowing is to take the first step and x-ray. |

Maj,
I know you must be suffering too. Try to work with family and friends and see if they may loan you a little bit of money. I am sure you will figure something out for you and your pup, I mean you were bright enough to talk to everyone here! Atleast you are trying to help your puppy, and not ignoring the fact that it is suffering. Good luck and keep us posted.

Maj, where approximately are you located (city/province-state/country)? Maybe someone here can help by referring you to a vet who accepts payment plans? I feel very badly for you and your pup. A friend's Schipperke broker her leg when she was little. She had to have 2 pins put in. That was over a year ago. She uses the leg well now, but will lift it when squatting to pee, and favors it a bit when the weather turns damp/cold. Good luck.

I'm sorry that your pup has had to deal with pain for 3-4 months. Surely there is more than one vet. Did you even ask the vet if they had a payment plan that you could do? You do know now he has a higher chance of needing surgery and a longer amount of time to recover.
Please just see a vet, it's in your's and your pup's best interest. Ask different vets what they're payment plan is? |

Thank you all for your concern. There aren't any payment plans. They do however offer insurance cards(similar to a credit card) But to qualify for coverage he can't be previously injured at time of registration. I live on Vancouver Island in BC. Im not going to give my dog away. Im going to fix him myself.

What Does Fix Him Yourself Mean? Your Dog Is Suffering, That's Not Fair To Him That Your Being Selfish. Can You Imagine If You Broke Your Arm 3 Or 4 Months Ago And Your Mom Never Took You To Get It Fixed, She Just Told The Other Kids Don't Play Rough With Her Because Her Arm Hurts And It Makes Her Cry! Don't Be So Cruel And Selfish And Let The Dog Go To Someone Who Can Afford To Help Him And Stop The Suffering!
