Blood in Luna's urine.

About two weeks ago, I noticed that Luna's urine was tinged red. I called my vet, got a urine sample in and there was blood detected, inflammation, but no real bacteria or anything. She was given baytril, just in case and we were supposed to see an improvement in 2-3 days. She seemed to respond slightly (didn't seem to be straining, no visible blood and wasn't licking), but I've notice this passed weekend, her urine is consistantly tinged red, instead of just the morning and evening urination, she's also straining.

She is going to go in for an x-ray to check for stones, tumors/polyps.

I'm totally stressing out... Luna's older - around 9 or 10 (not 100% sure) and I am worried it might be cancer. She has some growths on her back and legs, that are just cysts, but also had a benign tumor removed from her lip when she was about 7, i'm not sure if that makes her more susceptible to growths internally, though.

I know I shouldn't worry until I talk to her vet, but yeah. It's also, of course, really bad timing financially. We've booked flights to a wedding where my BF is a groomsman, had to do a plumbing repairs etc. Luckily, I've been a long time client at the vet and the receptionist said they would proibably be able to work something out, but yeah!

Hopefully the vet visit is this afternoon , this could be an emergency and she may have a blocked bladder. How much urine came out?

She is peeing normal amounts of urine and has been the whole time. She just seems to have the feeling of needing to go for a couple of minutes after she goes.

Her X-rays came back clear. She's going to go on a different anti-biotic, if that doesn't work we'll send her urine away for a better analysis and possibly an ultrasound.

unknown can you tell me how the sample was taken from Luna. (nosorb collection or cytesis, or did you collect it yourself.... There could be contamination in the sample. Do you have the results you could post...

I collected it myself and brough it to the vet within the hour. I'm not sure how the container would be contaminated with red blood cells...it was a new container and the blood was visible.

There were no detected bacteria...

Then why is she on antibiotics?

Blood in urine can be caused by sterile cystitis and antibiotics will be at best, useless.

what is the treatment for sterile cystitis - I didn't find any results for this when I did a search. I'll look for it specifically.

I should also mention that the Vet said because of Luna's arthrtitic spine and hips that she could have troubles emptying her bladder completely causing it to become inflamed.

She started anti-inflammatory drugs yesterday to treat her painful hips and she actually ran up the stairs this morning! We'll see how this goes and maybe it is in fact because of the arthritis.

I think Luna is a dog, scm...not absolutely 100% sure on it, though.

they pinpoint a cause and it's something easy to treat, .unknown.! The waiting till the diagnosis is made is always so hard!

I understand that anti-biotics are over-prescribed, but they only did a really basic test in the clinic. My Vet said that there is the chance that the bacteria could be there just not in the sample, and I would agree since the sample wasn't collected by a professional - just me, grabbing it mid-stream in my backyard. She isn't reacting to the medication and if there is a possibility that they could help, then I don't see a problem; especially when there were no other obvious causes.

Luna has gone in for a cystocentesis this morning and also to check out a lump that I found in her "armpit" region.

Hopefully we find something with this test because she's still peeing blood - we'll have results in about 5 days.

Sending you and Luna good thoughts. I know this is scary for you. I had a dog with recurrent UTIs, bladder cancer and kidney failure. I've been where you are and I understand the fear. Please know that Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the bladder is not a common cancer, unless you have a Scottie.

Ultrasound was used to discover my little Tipper's problems. A sterile urine draw was done and sent for culture to find the appropriate antibiotic.

I will keep Luna in my thoughts and prayers . She has a lovely face.

I haven't heard any news yet on the Urine test and when I tried to show the veterinary technician the lump, I could barely find it. When I initially found it, it was about the size of half an egg, then when I checked the next day it was smaller and then when I took her to the vet the following morning; it was about the size of a quarter. So, very strange, indeed. I guess maybe it is a lymph gland puffing up because of the bladder infection? We have to go back when the results of her test are back so I will have it checked again.

I just dropped Luna off at the vet on Friday to have the test done since my regular vet wasn't in. They love her at the office, it's so cute so they don't mind if she hangs out with them all day!

After she started the second type of antibiotics, we did see a great reduction and almost elimination of visible blood in her urine. The vet also found some siginifcant arthritis in her spine and hips, so he noted that sometimes with dogs who have that level of stiffness can't void their bladders properly - which can lead to inflammation and infection. So she also is on a course of Metacam. It also seems to help with her stiffness and she actually ran up the stairs the other day.

Hopefully we figure it out soon! Luckily, she doesn't appear to be in any pain so that's good. I know that they're good at hiding illness and what-not but I feel pretty in tune with her, and she also usually tells me in some way or another that she's not well.

Well, her culture test came back negative. So, the anti-biotics either did their job, or she has something more nefarious going on. However, since she started the anti-biotics, she has no more visible blood in her urine, so that more or less indicates that whatever infection she had, has been cleared up. Now, we are keeping her on a watch for the next little while just in case anything changes, then we'll get her in for an ultrasound.

The lump was determined to be a lipoma, which we'll also keep an eye on

Well, this has turned into quite the saga.

She has had this infection recurring up until now. They've now found strange cells in her most recent urine sample. It's been sent to a specialist for further review. I find out soon what the deal is.

She started urinating large amounts and drinking a lot of water, coupled with having mistakes in thehouse. We had her checked for diabetes, but her tests were clear, other than slightly elevated pancreatic enzymes. The vet said that is due to her two instances of pancreatitis.

Does anyone know if the test for Diabetes insipidus is the same as for "regular" diabetes?

I have never had a pet that had diabetes so don't know for sure but if both urine and blood tests have been done then I would think that your vet have covered it. Have you received the results back from the specialist?

Well, they sent her urine sample to the specialist and they think the weird cells are nothing to be concerned about and are a reaction to the inflammation/infection. She went through a course of anti-biotics and when we re-tested, her urine came back clean, but still with blood in it. She stopped peeing in the house and drinking excessively after the antibiotics.

We had a general blood test to check her organ functions and eveything was perfect, except for slightly elevated pancreatic enzymes. The doctor said it was due to her history and we will have to monitor that still.

So, it's not her kidneys, it's not her liver. Her x-ray was clear of tumors - it was also checked over by a specialist who found the same results. The only finding on the x-ray was that she has arthritis in her hips and lower spine.

We've got an ultrasound booked for Feb 11th and hopefully that will give us the answer and we can move on to treating whatever the problem is!
