Hairballs and cheap canned food?

We're feeding Fancy Feast wheat gluten free, but Forest keeps having hairballs and I'm about to rip out my hair. Is there another cheap canned brand that will prevent hairballs or limit it to like once or twice a month? Or should I just buy some petromalt and give that to him everyday?

At 79 to 89 cents per little can of Fancy Feast, I would hardly call that cheap anymore. The prices for that stuff have really skyrocketed in the last little while. I am sure if you go into one of the larger pet food stores, my favourite is Global, they can help you choose something of a better quality for not much more. Perhaps a larger size can for a bit more than the Fancy Feast and it will go farther.
Good luck.

Homemade raw is cheaper, but if you are not willing to do that, then I would say Wellness, in the large cans is your best bet. When I changed from cheap food to Wellness, Puddles' furballs became almost non existent. Last time I fed her FF, she vomited it up.

Global is where I buy my food too.

At Petsmart we pay 64 cents a can and that was two weeks ago . Where do you buy QMC?

We used to go to Global all the time when we were feeding Wellness then switched to Raw, but with only one income coming in we had to go the cheap kitty crack route.

If I were to make my own raw, that would be fantastic, but I seriously would need someone to walk me through it standing right next to me I'm a quick study but reading and hands on is very different to my brain. I wouldn't even need a grinder cuz my step-dad works at a chicken plant and I can get the ground chicken with bones. So any volunteers to help?

Here is the recipe I use:

http://www.catinfo.org/makingcatfood.htm

I basically do the following:

80% muscle meat (I also add chicken hearts and kidneys to my muscle meat). I buy in bulk and majority is chicken. When I can get beef for less than $2/lb, I will add beef. Jasper's fav is pork, so I do add pork.
I cut out fat from pork and skin off the chicken breasts, but leave it on the thigh/leg pieces.

Min 10% liver

10% bone

I add 6 raw egg yolks to 15lbs of food for their B vitamins.

4 capsules (500mg) of Taurine just to make sure they get their taurine.

Once per day I add a bit of salt (they only need a tiny bit for iodine).

Every second day, I add a salmon oil gelcap to their food for their omegas.

I freeze in daily amounts in medium size resealable freezer bags, taking out the air so it doesn't get freezer burn.

This feeds one cat full time raw, and 3 cats 50% raw for three weeks.

I buy meat that is under $2/lb, making it about .50 for a 6 oz can of food.

I guess that sounds easy enough... but a quick fix for hairballs, is the petromalt ok to give to Forest?

I prefer either Vet's Best or Vetbasis hairball gels. They don't contain petroleum products like the mineral oil in Petromalt (which also contains a lot of sugar).

Thanks SCM! I'll look for one like that.

Don't know if this is cause for concern but Forest has been having hairballs a lot lately. I've found 3 this week alone and the last one he almost did it on me but I caught him in time. It was a very dark brown liquid with the hairball. And I just read that dark brown liquid could possibly be related to a stomach ulcer? http://www.justanswer.com/questions/...brownish-vomit

I just picked him up now to put him in the crease of the recliner (he likes hammocks) and I dunno if I picked him up wrong or what but he started coughing and half sneezing. I brought him to the kitchen in case anything came up, fortunately nothing did, but he half sneezed/coughed 3-4 times.

Guess I'm not going to sleep anymore.
