Mother cat hissing at 4 months old kitten after hospital visit

Hi everyone,

I have a cat that had two female kittens... Now that the kittens are 5 months old I took them to the hospital to get them fixed. The kittens stayed overnight at the hospital. As soon as I brought the kittens home the mom started hiss at her kittens. Does the mom not recognize her own or what??? I don't know what to do... they used to all cuddle and sleep together but now the mom just doesn't want them around.

Please I need some advice.

Thanks in advance!!!

Nat

That's normal. They came back from the Vet's with all sorts of different smells on them. Keep them separated with maybe just a screen door between and allow sniffs same as if you were bringing in a brand new cat. If you let them be together monitor closely in case Momma cat tries to rough them up. They will probably be friends again in a few days or so.

Nat, welcome to Pets.ca! Do you have some baby powder in the house? If so, take little bit in your hands and rub down each cat with it on your hands. This will make them all smell the same. I went through this many times each time I took one or the other to the vet. It is because they smell different.

You can also put a dab of vanilla underneath each of their chins and this will work as well.

Good Luck!

Cindy

Same thing just happened with my puppy after her spay. Brought her home and my other dog took a sniff at her and growled. He never did like the vets. Soon as the puppy started smelling like her old self they were back to being good buds again.
