Poor Little Bear

This summer this was a mother bear and her cub hanging around down the road. When I first saw him he was just tiny.
Today I saw him again in the field by the road, standing there all alone.
Apparenly his momma was killed by hunters ( so the word on the road is)
He's got to be afraid and hungry. I doubt he will survive the winter alone. He is young. ( prolly about the size of a 3 month old Rottie pup but built, well like a bear)
I called MNR and they are going to get back to me and perhaps trap him.
I dont know what they will do with him though???
I just dont want him to suffer, freeze to death or starve come winter.
Lets all hope MNR comes soon.

If that is what they see fit for the little guy atleast he wont be suffering all alone on the side of the road to get run over and left for dead.
No hunter out there is going to kill him, for there is clearly not any meat on him. Its so sad.

There are a few places in B.C. that take in orphaned cubs so they don't end up in a zoo. Maybe Ontario has the same.

Oh Erykah that's terrible:sad: why hunt bears especially moms with cubs,it's sickening to say the least!
I have had no great experiences with the MNR,all I know about them is about killing, after they killed 3000 cormorants and I don't know how many thousand raccoons and foxes a couple of years ago, they will more than likely kill him:sad: Poor baby bear

Rainbow and W4F thanks for the links.
Unfortunately W4F the site you showed is approx 4 hours away. However! Rainbows sanctuary is only about 2 -2.5 hours away
I emailed them and am hoping for a reply.

There is a place near Sudbury that works with orphaned bear cubs. They keep them over winter and release them back to the wild when they are ready to go. You should call MNR is Sudbury and find our where this place is.

he/she is still hanging around, MNR hasnt returned a call to me yet and nothing from "Bear With Us " eiter.
I guess that one little cub isnt at the top of anyones priority list???
Im going to try to call the vet in Sudbury who also is a wild life rehab center. Its getting colder and the little cub still seems to be lost. Sitting in the middle of a feild in the middle of the day. ( doesnt seem right to me)

Erykah, I know you're really busy with Larry right now but could you keep contacting Bear With Us and the vet in Sudbury until you get an answer? MNR would probably be more inclined to destroy the cub.

Please keep us posted.

Bear is opened right now too, thats what happened to his mom. He doesnt cry a whole lot when i park the truck on the road and watch him from a distance. He just eats with the geese. ( I would kill for my digital camera right now)
I am going to keep on trying anyone who may listen. I think MNR isnt responding because bear hunting is open and they prolly figure some hunter will shoot him, but no hunter is going to use a tag for him, hes too tiny.
I will keep you all posted.

I would not contact the mnr again they will most likely come out and shoot him or her, we had the same thing here with 2 abandon fawns, mom was killed and I contacted a few sanctuaries close by and they told me NOT to contact the mnr as they would come shoot them, unfortunality a few weeks ago we lost one fawn to a speeding driver, the opp had to come shoot her right in my front yard:sad: the other one is still around and safe for now.

I remember a couple of years back, when a girl here at the Forum found 5 orphaned baby-coons,she called everywhere to get help,to no avail.
The MNR had ordered thousands of raccoons and foxes to be killed, because of a nonexisting rabiesscare.
No rescue was allowed to keep orphaned animals alive.
Only one of her orphans survived and she nurtured it until it one day said goodbye and joined his wild friends.
I have no great faith in the MNR,IMO they are more concerned with hunters rights, than our native animals.
I that someone will respond and rescue this poor baby,I cannot imagine having to watch him every day, without being able to help:sad:

Absolutely nothing yet. He ( or she ) is still out there, the vet rehab place doesnt take "healthy" animals. Bear with Us, hasnt responded to any of my emails and still no word from mnr ( I havent called them back either)
Im worried though cause he seems slim. I really dont think he will survive the winter if left there. I go by daily to see him ( with binocs) and he seems to be kinda sickly looking now.
I dont know what to do now?
Its sad to say, but I would almost rather him be dead than suffering like this.

If he seems to be kinda sickly looking then he's not healthy. Did you tell the rehab place that he is skinny and looks sick? And they still refused to take him? Could you try phoning Bear With Us?

I just spoke to our local wildlife rehab center. We are trying to speak to some people here and I've sent a message to a wildlife sanctuary up North, not too far from where you are. We're trying to figure out how to get the cub captured and transfered, or get a hold of people in your area.

In the meantime, in order to keep him alive, here's the recommandations coming form the rehab center:

Try and feed the cub everyday if possible, so he stays near. You can give him whole milk (the fatter the better - do you know farmers in your area who could sell you unpasteurized whole milk ?), fruits (bananas), peanut butter sandwiches. Just leave the food there, he'll feed on its own. He could drink as much as 3-4L of milk a day. You can add some honey in the milk.

I'm hoping to have an answer for you tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest. If you could just check up on the little guy to make sure he is there and still alive.

We're working on it !
