Ethoxyquin in cat food - info please
Title says it all... this was brought to my attention on another post, and I know nothing about it (and no real time to search!)
Can anyone enlighten me? Do high quality foods like Orijen or ??? use ethoxyquin as a preservative (I think) and is it proven to be harmful? Thanks in advance to the most educated pet-group I've met! ~Scary

It's used as a preservative, and I think it's used a lot in fish. You can always email the company and ask. I know there are a few threads around here discussing foods that do/do not have ethoxyquin, you could try doing a search. The thing is you have to check to make sure the company's suppliers don't use it. Just cause the pet food company doesn't add it, doesn't mean it's not already in there. I know, it's frustrating.

I feed Orijen to my two dogs and asked that very question:
Hello - we feed ORIJEN to our dogs and cats - it's all they eat (besides the occasional treat). Absolutely no ethoxyquin in ORIJEN, not a trace! Best Regards, Peter www.championpetfoods.com |

Pet food companies do not have to list it as an ingredient if they didn't add it themselves. Some of them state on their websites/bags that it isn't in their products, but if not, you need to email/phone to ask them if it is used by any of their suppliers.

Thanks for the info!
Stacer - yikes, that doesn't sound good.... Superwanda - if that came from an Orijen rep then that's good enough for me. I'll start trying Luna on Orijen later this week... we're trying new wet foods today/tomorrow, so don't want to do both at once of course. I bought a 400gm bag for $2 at Ren's - just enough to try her for a few days, and it comes with a $2 off coupon for buying a bigger bag later. Smart marketing!

Well then, that's double-y good! And yes, I'll update you when I switch her. Rainbow, weren't you feeding the DVP Nature (something), some of which is newly recalled? How are you doing?

Yes, I'm feeding my cats DVP's Natural Balance. I thought it was the venison and green pea but that must have been the previous bag as the current one is the chicken formula. It's almost finished and I'm going to switch back to the Innova again until the Natural Balance probelm is resolved. Once we get Orijen here I'm going to try that.
