Time of Year for Rabies Vaccs?
When I get my two furbabies, I want to be sure that I get them the right vaccs and whatnot. I know about not over vaccing (3 of my 7 past dogs had bad adverse reactions to vaccs). I am most concerned about when to get the Rabies vacc. I know it is bylaw here, so we will get that done. However I am not sure what time of year is best? Or if there is a difference? My guys will arrive most likely sometime this month. They will be 1 1/2 yrs and 10 months. I am not sure if they have their shots yet or not (I will find out, waiting on a call back). Of course, we live in town, the critters around us are deer, black bears (rare in this area, but not unheard of), marmots, red fox, and rodents. I think the only wildlife I've actually seen in the past 5 years in this home has been 2 deer, lol. Any sites, advise, etc is welcome I want to be armed with knowledge before jumping head first into vaccs, lol!

I'm not sure if it matters when you get the rabies vax, but here is a good article by Dr. Jean Dodds discussing her protocol and some of the issues related to vaccinations: http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/DODD...-PROTOCOLS.HTM

Wow there is so much to consider! When the first link mentioned that certain breeds are more likely to have adverse reactions to the vaccs, is there a list somewhere to read? I'm curious to see if any of my former dogs (and ones I've worked with in the shelters) are on it

Don't forget to ask about ticks and heartworm (are they not both common in the Okanagan??) I have always just had my dogs rabies vacs done whenever I get the dog. It's never mattered what time of year.

I have no idea about how common heartworm and ticks are here I've never come across any info about it, newspaper articles, warnings from vets, etc. Even while working at the SPCA we never had issues We must have been lucky. But I will inquire about them as well
