feliway diffusers- success?

my cat was recently prescribed amitriptyline for stress/overgrooming (described this in another thread). it seems to be helping a bit after a few days.

the vet also suggested feliway diffusers for more long-term (amitriptyline only for 3 weeks).

I used to work in a pet store and these got excellent reviews for preventing spraying, but I've enver used them myself. do they really calm cats down quite significantly? obviously this is preferable to drugs for me.

I'll let you know. I just got one for my kitty crises situation. I've bought the diffuser for my main floor. It was recommended to me by a cat behaviourist.

I used them when I adopted my two in the fall. Put two on the main floor as that was where the "problems" occurred. I was also burning lavender too. Don't know if either of those "solutions" worked or if they would have come around anyways but they certainly did not hurt. With the Feliway, it can take a month before you can see any results I was told.

Embean, I would get them now while she is on the drugs so it will be in the air once she gets off.

Kanis, don't despair...I am sure your two will be good as gold in no time.

Good luck to both of you

I think Feliway diffusers are great! My vet (cat-only clinic) started putting them in all the exam rooms and I did notice a difference in my own cat's stress level during his appointments. It's not some magic potion that will make everything instantly right in the world, but it did seem to ease his tension just a bit.

I've also used them when I moved (twice in 3 months) and when I brought in a pregnant semi-feral cat. I'm certain that they took the edge off the extreme stress of those situations, and helped all the kitties involved recover sooner.

I don't know if they relieve stress for cats, but I had them to try to stop spraying, and they didn't help at all.
