He spent the night at the hospital.. Chest and lung X-rays are being done today. Blood work had to be sent to the lab. Hopefully I will know more today on when we start treatment and what type of treatment we are going forward with.

This is more complicating than I thought.

2nd Update

Thank you for the good vibes. Believe you me - they are all being received.

Just got off the phone with the vet. Maddox's heart is in a very critical state. His heart is horribly enlarged and as she put it - ready to burst. Not in the literal sense it is at a state where we can loose him. She specifically asked about any coughing and other signs (other than the obvious of being terribly underweight) which there are none. I have had him for approximately 2 weeks and none of these symptoms are apparent. Not to mention that initially when I was networking for him for rescues for the past 1.5 months, his weight was average.

The course of action is as follows:

This weekend he is to be crated and very little movement. He must remain as quiet as possible. He will commence aggressive treatment next week. His heart is at a point where she must go fast and aggressive to save him. He may or may not make it. If he doesn't - at least I tried. If he does (which I am convinced he will) we will then tackle the leg. One thing at a time.

Tonight, I will listen closely and find out everything step by step. She is going to show me the x-rays of the heart so that I understand the severity as well as all treatments going forward - what to expect.

All this is bitter sweet. I want so much to start NOW but so affraid of the outcome. Regardless, this will kill him if I don't do something about this immediately.

Please - prays needed for Maddox. He is such a wonderful soul. I wish that you could all meet him and know who he is.

BenMax, I'll send all my prayers in Maddox's direction. I'm hoping the fact he did not have the cough and his weight wasn't bad in the time you had him may be a good sign.

Come on Maddox, fight! We're all pulling for you!

Thank you so much. He was a stray looking for a rescue for months. I knew about him and tried to find a rescue but no one was interested due to the leg issue. Heartworm was not even a thought at that time as where I got him, they do not test. So long story short, he was to be PTS. I couldn't let that happen as I knew him and he was a gentle boy. So - I just took him and decided to worry about things later. Then I saw the vet for complete physical. Needless to say - surprise after surprise. But I do not regret any of this for one moment. He has given me such joy that I am so honored to have him in my life. Again...fate.

I know that Maddox knows that he is safe and loved. Together we will work through this.

I love those pictures BM , and I had the pleasure to meet Maddox for a short while yesterday morning. He's stunning and all you want to do is hug him and kiss him

I'm still saying this has to work out for him , right when he can experience love and a good life .... things just have to improve for him so he can get that life he deserves !

Last night's vet visit

Saw the X-rays of Maddox's heart and it is definately enlarged. I wasn't sure what I was looking for until she showed me a comparison. Now I understand why we are going aggressively with the treatment. Basically, there is no time to spare.

So of course I will go for it. Either way, treatment is going to save him as he is currently being killed by these parasites. Such a horrible disease which is preventable. So sad.

Also saw the X-ray of hips and knee. Hips are great actually. Not bad at all. The knee is shifted and fragmented at the end. Ligaments are also torn. (to be honest, looking at the x-ray, I have not a clue as to what is normal and what isn't - this sure is a learning experience for me ). She is confident that this surgery will be successful, however he may always have a limp, arthritis when older and maybe inflamation now and again. All manageable and not a concern.

So - we are tackling the heartworm first and then take care of the knee. She is confident that everything will be fine but he will be at the clinic on Monday for treatment and must remain there for a day or two.

I feel better knowing that we are doing whatever we can for him. With wonderful people behind me (that would be my friends here at pets and personal friends) I have strength and determination to keep positive.

Forgot to say - he is on Rimadyl for the knee.

We are going to be fine.

I remember your words. Though initially I was blaming Him and feeling rather selfish about this whole ordeal. I have come to realize that there is a reason for this. My mom tells be that Maddox was meant to be with me as otherwise he would not have known how much he is loved...for whatever time I have him or through whatever he must go through, we will do this together.

Thanks for your words Alsan. It did stick!

wow, are you paying for all this yourself? thats amazing, hopefully it won't add up to too much, here whenever I bring in a stray usually it costs me around 2-300 for the whole 9 yards but luckily they give me the rescuer discount, you're a good person to put cost aside for the love of a wonderful dog. I wish Maddox the best of luck
