Puppy throws up

I have a shi tzu who is 1 year and 4 months old. _ she throws up either a white or yellow foammy vomit. Its not after she eats - it usually when she wakes up in the a.m. or after a nap.

I had her on puppy food (Pro plan), she's been to the vet's three times for this, the first two times they dewormed her (even though they didn't feel that was the problem) and this last time they changed her food to a more easier digestable one. But it hasn't helped.

My husband seems to think it might be acid reflux - since its not after she eats. She also gets the hicups alot (but not at the same time she vomits).

It just doesn't seem normal for her to be throwing up every couple of days.

Go to a vet. They are the only ones that can give you a reason as to why your dog is vomitting and what he/she is bringing up.

I have no idea what's wrong but I will share my experience:

our GSD used to vomit yellow foam pretty much every morning for quite some time as a pup. I think this was a combination of two things: crappy food (we were feeding ProPlan, as this was before I became informed about proper nutrition, you should consider changing food) and drinking water on an empty stomach after waking up. You might try feeding her smaller meals, more often, or feeding her earlier in the morning. Changing the food and changing the time we fed our dog made a difference for us.

Is she on heartworm preventative? I know dogs with heartworms start to cough and vomit once the infestation gets bad enough. Also a simple dewormer such as the ones used to kill intestinal parasites wouldnt kill heartworms. I would try a second opinion from a different vet. A promblem can get MORE costly the longer it goes untreated.

Thanks! That coming from the Pet mom who spends roughly $300-$400 a month at the vet for different allergy remedies and grain free dog food, and raw meat, and benadryl, and antibiotics, and prednisone.... etc...etc...etc...lol

How many times does she eat during the day? I would second the suggestion of changing the feeding schedule. IMO what you are describing is bile. Dogs can vomit bile when their stomachs have been empty for too long.

If you change the feeding schedule and she still vomits every few days, I'd get another vet's opinion and possibly bloodwork done to rule out any medical conditions.

My tzus also had this problem and it was usually because their stomachs were too empty. Try giving your pup a light snack before bed (even a couple of treats seemed to work for me) and as the others suggested, change her meal times.

Good luck and if that doesn't help maybe time for a second opinion from another vet.

oh ya.....got pictures of your pup????
