Nookie and Montana

We took them to the Santa Claus parade last night. It was REALLY cold lol. Poor little Montana just doesn't have the coat that Nookie does, so we put him in a sweater and booties. He looked so adorable

Nookie just gets more handsome every day, Robyn. It's a wonder Montana didn't bite you for dressing him up like that. LOL. Joking! Red is his colour I think.

Looking good. Love the sweater and boots. I think it would be fun to take them to a parade like that.

Did your handsome boys get to meet Santa Pawz? Those booties are just too cute!

Thanks all! They definitely had a good time
Montana does look good in red! He's growing up to be such a handsome boy

Hazel, they got to see him on the float, but not greet him. That's ok though... they got to take a picture with him a couple weeks ago!

GF, thank you! I think he's looking very good these days. He's definitely feeling better! He still has issues, but for the most part, has come a long way. He's having issues with his teeth right now, so we're going to see a specialist on Tuesday. He broke his bottom right canine and all his teeth are ground to the dentin. He has one tooth that's cracked, but they aren't sure how deep. It may be to the dentin, or it may be to the pulp. Either way, it's going to be a lot of work, and probably very costly. But when isn't it, when it comes to him

Very handsome boys, Montana is quite the looker in red. Robyn it goes without saying if it involves the monster it is expensive. He is such a lucky boy to have the both of you.

The monster, I like that. LOL. Well, I wish you luck with Nookie's teeth, I hate to imagine what a specialist might charge for all that work. Although, I did once have a base narrow canine shifted into place with a special plate and the help of a canine dentist and looking back on that, it was money well spent and not that expensive. Sounds as if your boy is a real power chewer. Glad to hear he is doing a bit better now. Keep us posted on what he has to have done please.

GF, he does love to chew, but they think his issues are caused by something they call Jing Syndrome in Chinese medicine or Runt Syndrome in Western medicine (though he's no runt!! lol). Dr. Karen Marsden was explaining it to me last week. She said that they often refer to that in dogs that have the issues Nookie does, and also a lot of "red" dogs due to the recessed genes, and they almost always have bad teeth. I'm sure a lot of his is, at least in part, due to the high doses of long term pred that he was on. Either way, it has to be done. I hate to think of him hurting or suffering at all. I've had toothaches and they're horrid. We *think* he may have to have at least one root canal which will start at $1600 depending on what they have to do, then the cracked tooth will probably be an extraction and they do offer crowns. So for the teeth that are ground down, that may be an option. We'll know more tomorrow evening

I don't know how I missed this thread. What cuties they are. And yes Montana looks great in red. Boots and all. I think Halo would be afraid of Santa, she's a bit of a woos.

I think Nookie would be a good candidate for dentures! Poor Nookie having to get all that dental work done. I have to go on Friday myself, I think I cracked a tooth biting on an olive I didn't know was on the plate. It's been hurting for two weeks now. I dread that, so I hate to think of poor Nookie. And you guys of course for having to pay for it. Sweet Nookie Monster is such a lucky boy that you are his parents.

Thanks for the good wishes for the monster!! The visit was GREAT!!! And such a welcome suprise (or shock? ) as it didn't result in anything else having to be done!!! They say there's a first for everything! I guess we're just SO used to "if something can go wrong, it will" when it comes to Nookie

The dentist did a complete oral exam. The tooth that Dr. Karen said was cracked, wasn't! He said he could understand why she thought that because his teeth have "grooves" and one was stained and looked like a crack. Nookies teeth don't have the nice white enamel and he said it's due to the way they were formed when he was a baby, probably because of all his issues, but overall, they're not too bad!

The teeth that are ground down to the dentin, he thinks will repair themselves and the broken canine is to the dentin and he thinks that will also repair itself. He said about 1 out of every 3 oral exams are wrong and they find more once they do x-rays and examine the pockets in the gumline, but he feels that with all Nookies issues, the risk of putting him under just to confirm everything is ok just isn't worth it. He gave us a few things to watch for in case he's wrong and there is something more that he can't see, so we will be monitoring those "signs". Nookie does have a couple of inflamed spots on his gums that may be causing him some owwies so he recommended we use a product called Healthy Mouth. He said it's scientifically proven to reduce tartar and plaque by up to 85%, and being that Nookie isn't a dog that can have a routine cleaning, it will help him to keep his mouth healthier and his teeth longer, so we're going to start using it as well as brushing his teeth everyday. He was wonderful and we really, REALLY appreciated his honesty and true concern for our Nookie

Oh, that's awesome that his teeth weren't as bad as first thought! Ridge has a terrible bite that's resulted in some of those ground down teeth, too. Our vet wasn't too concerned about them, either.

I'll second that wish for an easy resolution to your toothache, DD!

DD, be brave and strong, nothing the dentist can do will last as long as the fortnight long toothache you've already suffered. OUCH!, I am cringing at the thought of that.
Robyn, what can I say but HOORAY!!! You have had so much expense with Nookie and while I know you consider it worthwhile, heck, if anyone deserved a break, you two do. What a genuinely good man that dentist is. Interesting about the red dogs , my last red male cattle dog didn't have good teeth.

GF, thanks!!! And I'm SO glad we got this break... now I can buy some much needed winter tires LOL

And I'm not surprised in seeing this after my conversation with Dr. Karen. She completed studies and actually wrote a paper on the "red" genes. She really went in to some detail at our last visit and I immediately thought of you! She had a couple of clients with cattle dogs and treated several over the years. She said that every one of them she had treated had seizures! And all had bad teeth as well. She said that gene causes many issues, and is worse in the breeds where the red isn't a "normal" color such as cattle dogs, huskies and malamutes. I've always loved the reds, but I think I would avoid them after our conversation lol.

Rgeurts, I'm so glad to hear that Nookie's dental exam went well. I hope mine is that easy! Seriously though, what a relief for both of you. What a great dentist that he's honest and caring for the dog. Glad you will get your tires now, that's very important you know!
