E-collar for cats?
This may be a stupid question, but do they make e-collars for cats?
I want to use one on Rupert for a few days so he'll stop chewing on himself while i give the salmon oil a chance to work for his skin and switch him to a new food.

I think they do, Chaser--they're just a downsized version of the Elizabethan collars they use for dogs I'll bet your vet would have one! So Rupert is still ripping out hair and chewing?

Yes, yes he is.....now has a skunk-like bald patch running down his back. It's sad and funny all at the same time.
I'm starting salmon oil in hope of relieving the itchies and am going to look for a food with a protein other than chicken, just in case. But Toonces said he did the exact same thing at the same time last year in her heated garage.....she thought he was just lonely then, but it's seeming more likely that his skin is super-sensitive to dryness. We've got a humidifer going now too. Okay, they won't laugh at me when I ask for a kitty e-collar at the vet! (It's not my vet I'm going to, since he's over an hour away. I'm just dropping into a nearby clinic to ask to buy one.....I didn't want them to think I'm nuts)

Nope, they won't think you're nuts.
I feel bad for poor Rupert! She doesn't get quite that bad, but Cass would get all itchy and flaky on her back in winter. We started her on Lipiderm during the winter months and it cleared up, so the salmon oil does the same with Rupert. Just a thought--have you had his T3/T4 levels checked? Cass developed autoimmune hypothyroidism last year and is getting a low level of thyroxine--and all of a sudden, her coat seems to be just fine even without the oil this winter.

They won't laugh when you ask for an e collar. Some kitties need them for after they are s/n or other surgery. I think they cost around $20. If one will stop him from ripping fur out it should help. Poor guy.
Sending lots of his way.

Probably not it, then. Do cats not get hypothyroidism? Setters are the number 1 breed with the problem - hence 3 of our 8 are being treated for it. On the other hand, dogs don't typically get hyperthyroidism because their bodies are so good at clearing out the excess hormone Is it opposite in kitties?

That soft collar looks like a very good idea. When Vlad and Oksana were S&N, I visited them that evening and they both had on collars.

Since this also happened last year, if it was around the same time I would think more along the lines of dry itchy skin from sharp temperature change & the heaters in the house coming on, vaccine related, a food allergy, or stress/loneliness/idopathic - I had a cat that would literally scratch a hole between her shoulder blades  every October that's when her appt was every year & where the vaccine went, the timing also coincided with the heaters coming on

simba had to wear one for three months. they make hard, soft and fabric e collars. usually in a 12 inch size. you can get them at any vet. depending on why you need it and how your cat tolerates it, makes you decide which one you want to get. simba had the hardest kind they make and i cut it back away from her face so she could eat. they tell you that you don't have to do that. well you do. simba could not eat unless i cut it back.
