Puppy eating her own poo
I've had my border collie puppy for 3 days now, she's doing wonderful! Potty training is on it's way.... but she's eating her poo! We'll take her out for a poopy break and she eats her poo right after. Why is she doing this? She eats her food 3 X's a day, 1/2 cup each time.
How do I nip this in the butt, she doesn't wants treats to distract her after, she wants her poo instead. |

At this age, it'd be a great opportunity to teach her the "leave it" or "drop it" command.
As disgusting as the habit is, I think it's a lot more common than you think. Some pups tend to grow out of it quickly. Both my boys used to enjoy "poopsicles" their first winter. Timber seems to have grown out of it, but I still catch Jasper occasionally. There are several different products on the market that you can add to her food, which is supposed to make it taste bad (I know, like it doesn't taste bad already ). Some people have had gread success with them, others haven't. Your best bet is to just pick it up immediately so she doesn't get the opportunity to um, "snack". Best of luck. P.S. Do you have any pics of your little cutie patutie? |

The first thing you need to look at is her diet. Often dogs that are missing something important, will resort to eating their own poo.
The second thing you want to keep in mind is that some puppies can't really go a very long time with their stomachs empty. While 3x seems like a regular feeding schedule, she may need to eat more often. (At least 4 meals in her day). Eating feces, believe it or not, is quite a normal action for a puppy; and generally isn't harmful, though pretty gross for us to watch them.

Believe me! If I could find a way for dogs to stop eating poop, I wouldn't have to work another day in my life!
The only remedy I have found and after listening to so many variations of this concern is like what Sib.HuskyMom said, Your best bet is to just pick it up immediately so she doesn't get the opportunity to um, "snack". That's the only solution that I have found, worked!

I saw an episode of It's Me or The Dog that deals with this issue. I love Victoria Stilwell. She doesn't use weird tactics like some trainers. It's very straightforward reward-based training.
