Stargazers are here!

Here's this year's sighting of stargazers. They are so eye candy.

Can someone tell me what this is?

So every year this plant keeps popping up. I have no idea what it is or where it came from.

During the day the flower is all tightly wound and closed. At dusk, the flower opens and has this beautiful scent that is so significant to us and our neighbors. It has somewhat of a tacky feel that if you brush up on it, you're left with a sticky feel on your skin.

Your stargazers are really vibrant this year, klm!!

The mystery plant looks like my Nicotiana flowers, but mine open during the day Don't know if your night-bloomers are in the same family, but a different species, or something entirely different.

Someone told me that they look like Nicotiana but because they bloom at dusk, I'm left with questions? Also if you brush up against it, it leaves a terrible sticky feeling on your skin.

I just did a quick search on Nicotiana and it sounds like they commonly bloom at dusk and have a lovely scent. It also said they like shade...which explains why mine aren't doing so well and blooming at odd times.

Nicotania is what it looks like to me as well. Nicotania gives off a wonderful scent at night. It is self seeding for you.

Yep that's a flowering tobacco.

Your stargazers should give you lots of fragrance too!

The buds on mine are starting to color up. Won't be long until they open.

I've heard that this was referred to as a tobacco plant. I have never planted Nicotania but am curious as to how it ended up in my flower beds?

Does it actually grow from the tobacco of a cigarette butt?

No!

It's a flowering plant in the tobacco family, I think. You can buy they at nurseries--I bought mine this year for the hidden garden. I hope mine reseed...but I don't think I have them in a very good spot. Yours are in much better shape than mine are!

The smoking type tobacco plants have very small seeds, almost like looking at grains of sugar. You may end up with a few thousand seeds.

Yep, I have tons of them here. I grew them in the greenhouse a couple of years ago. They are a neat plant.

Wish I were a pro at growing things from seeds. I planted dozens of seeds this spring and everything died except two rose campions from 14+

I have no idea where these came from and they just keep popping up every year in abundance!

They keep seeding themselves in spots where I don't want them to grow so I end up pulling them out and composting them.

Perhaps a seed exchange CearcaQC?

Sure why not?

I have a juicy annual to share with you all also! But haven't taken a photo of it yet. The people who gave it to me call it a flowering maple. But the stems are really dark colored and the flowers are blue/purple. The pods look exactly like the chinese lantern plants only these don't turn orange. I don't know its proper name yet.
