% of Protein in dog food

Is there any concern for a higher protein diet in large breed dogs? I know there is concern for Pano when dogs eat a high protein diet.

I have never heard of a concern of feeding higher protein diets to larger breed dogs. I myself actually prefer a grain free diet (higher protein) over a diet that contains grains (lower protein). But, if you have a high active larger breed dog I would highly advise you to use a food that contains grains since these high energy dogs will do better with the added carbs. And just wondering what you mean by Pano? Is that regarded to the kidneys?

I've heard the calcium is the real concern, not the protein since the former promotes rapid bone growth which is bad.

It's definitely not the protein....it is the calcium but mostly the phosphorous that is the concern. There is a thread here about it....I'll go look for it.

Protein in dog food & pano

http://www.jersey.net/~mountaindog/berner1/lpano.htm

Hi EC. The above link leads to a very good article on pano.

My GSD is pretty active - out every day for at least 2.5 - 3hrs and also does obedience training for 1/2hr 1-2 times per day. Looks like I need food that has a bit of carb. I'm going to try to lower the amount of the Canidae I have been giving him. It says he should have 3 cups - he's been getting about
3 3/4 cups. Hopefully this will help harden up his stools. I like the ingredients in Canidae - except for the barley.

Thanks for the post Rainbow!

What that is a very informative article. It seems Orijen actually cares about their customers - not Canidae. I emailed Canidae and they basically told me I should trnasition my dog from old to new - dughhh. I told him that was not my issue.
