we get them aplenty. Whereabouts do you live, in the country or city? We are also plagued with cluster flies and asian ladybugs, which enter our country home quite easily. The carpet beetles apparently feed on those as well (the ones that die in the walls/attic etc). Top that all off with dog hair and... The good news is they're not harmful to your house, won't get into your pantry or anything, and aren't a "dirty" (i.e. disease-carrying) critter. We've learned to live with them (and the cluster flies and the ladybugs ). ETA: they're also called "museum beetles", because they will eat the fur of preserved animal specimens and the exoskeletons/shells of preserved arthropods.

Trust me, I am married to the King of all Clean Freaks and we *still* manage to find those nasty little carpet beetles occasionally....we personally haven't found a way to get rid of them yet, so we just try to dispose of the ones we do.

Well I had to look them up but found this site, http://www.getridofthings.com/get-ri...et-beetles.htm - they had some interesting tips on there you may want to take a look. Boric acid - hmmmm Good luck to you. Oh and the cute factor worked, Milly is adorable.

So what do these little buggers look like? I'm an awful housekeeper and I'll bet I've seen them but never knew. Probably I have them all named and talk to them frequently, but I've been for years, so anything is possible!
Milly is lovely, by the way!

the ones we get are about the length of a grain of rice, only wider...and are light brown with dark bands. They're chunky little guys.

Sort of flat? Like to hang out in unexpected places?
Sounds like George and Harold...

not super-flat...I tend to find them on window sills or in corners Very oval-shaped, and domed on top.

Oh, okay. So maybe I don't have any! whew!
Kinda was hoping for them, though--lord knows we have enough dead asian ladybeetles to keep them fed.

Dermestid (carpet/museum beetle) larva (pretty hairy):
Larvae Adults (these are the type we get mostly): Longer oval ones and smaller roundish guys (those are, of course, the technical names)

Nope....not the same as George and Harold--they're more elongated, a bit flatter, maybe a darker brown with black bands at the ends. At least, that's how I remember them. Haven't seen them for a while--they're more prevalent during fall and winter.

OMG! They are sure furry!
Thankfully I've never seen any of those in my house. But we have all wood floors, except for the sun porch. Maybe that has something to do with it? The British tv series, "How Clean is Your House" has a brand new season and I've seen some new episodes. One house they went to had HUNDREDS of those beetles on the guy's kitchen counter! He had piles and piles of toast crumbs with bugs crawling all over. On the show they called the bugs "larder beetles." I think regular cleaning is probably the best thing, instead of chemicals.

they'll show up, even in a clean house, alas. If you're in a 100-year old schoolhouse with dubious air-tight-ness, flies and ladybeetles will get in, and the carpet beetles will follow. Not much you can do.
But um, yeah, if your counter is crawling with insects??? Maybe it's time to clean up a bit.
