New Puppy Coming-Safe Toys

We are finally getting another dog. It has been a year and a bit since Shaggg died and we are finally ready for a new puppy. Shagg was 13, so it has been a while since we last dealt with a puppy. One thing I remember is that puppies chew everything, and need lots of toys. Since our new puppy is a golden retriever/lab white german sheperd x this will likely be especially true for ours.In the last 14 years, I'm fairly certain some of the older toys have disappeared or been deemed unsafe. There are also new toys available.

Which toys did your puppy play with?
Which were long lasting?
Are there any toys or bones for that matter that we should avoid getting?

Congratulations!! You are going to be busy with the kitties and a new pup!!

Any toys left from a year ago IMO should be thrown out. They would have a year to disinegrate further not to mention the germs.
Kongs are great for pups - size appropriate of course. There is a "new" toy out there - Skineeez - that dogs seem to love. Once puppy starts teething she/he will need teething toys/frozen washcloths to relieve the pain of those new teeth coming in. Other than that........ a couple of sites to look at as a precautionary thing........... Thanks Frenchy for the reminder on those balls!!

I would recommend a kong and a few different nylabones (make sure you get the puppy-versions and the appropriate size). Well-make rope knots have stood up well in our house, and good quality tennis-type balls (kong makes a football-shaped one we like) that are large enough not to be choked on have been popular. Stuffies/squeekies are fun, but require supervision if they're getting de-stuffed.

No advice for you...we don't "do" puppies. Too much work

Titus LOVED(sitll does) his kong when he was a pup and his rope (with knots at the ends, looks like a bone)

Our upstairs neighbor gave Titus a HUGE tenis ball https://secure.k9bytes.com/PartyPetS...%5CTP68006.jpg and He -always- play with it outside (See, this lady has a dog, who's like 16!!! and soooo fat, the belly touch the ground when walking (or trying too) (glands problem, but shes holding on!!!) So she gave Titus the ball when she saw him play outside hehe

nows hes more a sucker for raw hide bones and his nylabone ^^ but really, he rotates

Rope toys are really great, we also love Kongs in our house. A Cuz ball is really great when they get older (never seen a puppy version). Maggie has never been a squeeky toy dog but something about that ball she can't get enough of. Tricky treat ball or the Buster cube is great for something to do while your gone.

There was an article in a recent issue of The Whole Dog Journal - that talked about the dangers of letting pups chew on rubber/latex toys. Apparently the chemicals that are used to make the rubber flexible are ingested by the pup as it chews on the toy and can cause all sorts of health issues. The article said that if a toy has that funky rubber smell, then do not give it to a pup under any circumstances (the smell is a dead give away that the chemicals are being released). I can go back and see what issue it was in if you'd like to order a copy from their website.
