amitriptyline??

so, I have a whole maze of threads going. my problem is described here:

http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=71788

I was convinced it was an ear infection. symptoms are: head shaking, lip licking, scratching head/ears intensely, face washing.

I went to the vet and it seems my cat is in perfect health. we did move about a month ago. she seemed fine for about 3 weeks but this all started a few days ago. everything else (eating/playing) is normal. the vet seems to think it's a stress thing over moving and has prescribed amitriptyline- 100mg daily in a transdermal gel for 3 weeks.

I have to say I'm skeptical. the symptoms seem so physical. but, I trusted the vet and I hope this will just provide some kind of buffer zone for the scratched areas to heal (she bled in one spot and has lost some fur). if it really is about moving hopefully this will allow her to calm down for 3 weeks and when she comes around she'll realize it's not so bad?

she also recommended those feliway things and I've heard good reviews of those. maybe I will pick some up for the long term.

has anyone dealt with this med before? I wouldn't want to take antidepressants myself. I'll have to see how it goes.

Hmmmm, what are you feeding your cat? This sounds just like Jasper when he has food with corn in it.

I feed her horizon legacy dry & wellness cans. Both are grain free so there should be no corn. The vet didn't bring up an allergy but I did wonder about it afterwards. Maybe she assumed it wasn't possible when I told her what food she eats.

oh : ( I do give her dumpy treats, like temptations and pounce and purina party mix nonsense. but that's not new. but, that's probably all crap.

I will get some better treats!

what does corn have to do with cat nervous breakdowns, though?

Nothing.

Jasper would scratch at his ears, eyes, paw at his face, shake his head but still act like a healthy kitty. It turned out to be corn causing him to itch. There were no signs of hives or anything. Sometimes he would scratch his eyes and ears until they bled.

One of our cats was on the amytripteline for spraying, it made him very mellow. It didn't stop the spraying, but since it made him calm, maybe that would help yours. 100mg sounds like a kind of a high dose, our cat weighs 15 lbs and was only put on 10mg.

My vet prescribed the same thing for my cat, who has ongoing cystitis issues. What she has is mainly described as Idiopathic cystitis. She has all the symptoms but her tests all come back normal. This medication is an anti-depressant and used for cats who are under stress.
