Im all about the Solid Gold right now!
Looks like Solid Gold was a good choice for us. Prin i remember you mentioning the fact that they have no corn but theres no mention of the Gluten content which is just as bad. turns out ( i just read it) that they dont use wheat gluten and seem to have upgraded their food too. Im pretty stoked on it really. Roland loves it, i have already noticed a decrease in shedding and his coat is thicker (and thats only after 5 days!)

lol Don't believe the "upgrades".
As for gluten, there is gluten in there, Cracked Pearled Barley, but if your kitty is fine with gluten, it should be fine. |

thinking of switching my guy over to wolfking after all this menu stuff...
prin are your dogs still on it? any problems? |

Why would you switch them because of the menu stuff? Oh, nevermind- I thought you were switching off Solid Gold...
Mine haven't been on Wolf King since the fall when the formula changed (new formula didn't agree with my two...). Jemma, however, is on Barking at the moon, and I have no intention on switching her at the moment. |

did the formula change for the worse?
The only reason I'm thinking WolfKing is because the protein levels are close to the Wellness he is on now. I see Mmillennia and Hund-n-flocken made the WDJ list and they are 22% protein as well. I know my wife won't let me feed him lamb due to ethical reasons so Mmillennia is the only other option really. Is beef a decent protein, I would prefer turkey or chicken or fish because they is less fatty in it's natural state, but I know very little about how these proteins and fats are converted to kibble. Any recommendations would be appreciated...other brands as well of course. He's a 20 pound, 5 year old, active terrier. Last edited by worrier; March 23rd, 2007 at 03:22 PM. |

What about Canidae? It would be cheaper than wellness (most likely) and it's chicken and turkey. www.canidae.com
It's just hard to recommend a food with the state the industry is in right now... |

They upped some grains, added stuff that wasn't needed, tried to cover it up, and then didn't change the bags, so we were unaware they changed.. Some of our pets got sick from the instant change over.. New bags smelled like barnyard..

I would feel better if the first two ingredients were chicken and turkey, instead of chicken MEAL and turkey MEAL. Am I being irrational? The "meal" puts me off. |

Thanks, MP... I forgot that question...
Worrier, it's actually better in the meal form because it means there is more of it... When the food is extruded at super high temps, the water of the whole meats evaporates and it isn't nearly as heavy coming out as it was going in, which means it gets bumped down the ingredient list. Meal is dry, so what goes in, comes out. Canidae is one of the few companies throughout this who has really tried to be upfront and honest (as far as we can tell)... They are the only ones who don't seem to send out "spin" or PR emails with 1000 words to say nothing at all. I posted the email I got from them today here: http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=38162 |

Didnt see if you were talking about a cat or dog,but i have to say Solid Gold is the only thing my cat loves,i tried Wellness,Innova etc ,and she didnt like any of them, and the solid gold wet food actually doesnt look like mush.

Yeah, maybe one day we'll learn different info that says meal is bad, but for now, it's #1, IMO....
Good luck! |

Prin, another question:
White rice is listed as Canidae's fourth ingredient. Is there some nutritional value white rice possesses that I am not aware of? I thought it was pretty useless. |

also, what are these?

It's a carb, and a fiber, and it does provide some nutrition.

The products that probiotics produce... Probiotics on the food would probably be dead (even though they usually claim they aren't) so instead, some companies just put the products- what the probiotics produce... Helps with digestion, much like yogurt would, but way less effectively than pure probiotics.
