Question For those residing in Toronto: questions about cat safety

Hi! I'm here to get some advice for my friend and her cat Buster.

My friend got Buster from a family friend about 5 months ago and he's currently 5 years old. He's a domestic shorthair and is tabby brown. He's overweight:sad:because of the excessive dry food and limited exercise that he received from his previous owners.

My friend had asked many questions about Buster to the previous owner and it turns out, he doesn't have a microchip nor is he licensed. Buster's gonna go down to the Toronto Humane Society in about a year to get another rabies vaccination and I was wondering: "Since THS animals are microchipped for free before being sent home and Buster's gonna be there to get a rabies shot, would they implant a microchip for free?" Buster needs the microchip to get the license so yeah...please answer my question! ^^

No pictures available right now, but we might take some soon! Buster is fidgety and doesn't hold still once the camera goes clickWe're going to try and get him a tag soon but my friend doesn't think that Buster will allow it. He also tries to avoid being picked up so

Thanks everyone! =)

I don't think the Toronto Humane Society offers free microchipping. The cost of the microchip is included in the adoption fee of the animal. They would probably charge you to do it.

THS doesn't charge for adoption but I think they would charge for a microchip since Buster didn't come from the Humane society...Thanks for the input though! ^^

I agree - highly unlikely they'll do it for free if you didn't adopt the cat from there.

=) Okay, thanks. I'll tell my friend that she might need to go to the vet and get it.

You may want to rethink....

Toronto is forcing CAT owners to licence their cats, even if indoor, microchipped etc. $240 - $5,000 fine if you dont and cat could be impounded and euthanized.

Microchip at cut rate vet is about $35, but not reliable as Animal Services (read Toronto Pet Police) dont always scan

Silly idea a CAT LICENCE

(cue Monty Python skit : Man: Hello. I would like to buy a fish licence, please.

Clerk: A what?

Man: A licence for my pet fish, Eric.

Clerk: You must be a loony.

Man: I am not a loony. Why should I be tarred with the epithet "loony" merely because I have a pet halibut? I've heard tell that Sir Gerald Nabarro has a pet prawn called Simon... you wouldn't call him a loony! Furthermore Dawn Pathorpe, the lady showjumper, had a clam called Stafford, after the late chancellor. Alan Bullock has two pikes, both called Chris, and Marcel Proust had an 'addock! So if you're calling the author of 'A la recherche de temps perdu' a loony, I shall have to ask you to step outside!

Clerk: All right, all right, all right. A licence?

Man: Yes!

Clerk: For a fish.

Man: Yes!

Clerk: You are a loony.

Man: Look, it's a bleeding pet, isn't it? I've got a licence for me pet dog Eric, I've got a licence for me pet cat Eric.

Clerk: You don't need a licence for your cat.

Man: I bleedin' well do and I've got one! Can't be caught out there!

Clerk: There is no such thing as a bloody Cat Licence.

Man: Yes there is.

Clerk: No there isn't.

Man: Is!

Clerk: Isn't!

Man: I've bleedin' got one, look! What's that then?

Clerk: This is a dog licence with the word 'dog' crossed out and 'cat' written in in crayon.

Man: Man didn't have the right form.

Clerk: What man?

Man: The man from the cat detector van.

Clerk: The loony detector van, you mean.

Man: Look, it's people like you what cause unrest.

Clerk: What cat detector van?

Man: The cat detector van from the Ministry of Housinge.

Clerk: Housinge?

Man: It was spelt like that on the van. I'm very observant. I never seen so many bleedin' aerials. The man said their equipment could pinpoint a purr at four hundred yards, and Eric being such a happy cat was a piece of cake.

Clerk: How much did you pay for this?

Man: Sixty quid and eight for the fruit-bat.

Clerk: What fruit-bat?

Man: Eric the fruit-bat.

To9oronto Humane Society (THS) often does NOT charge for adoption, because they regularly get into cycles where they are way overcrowded... They hold 'Midnight MAdness' 24 hour adoptathons to relieve the strain.

I have seen them go from 140 cats (manageable) to 282 cats (desperate) often.

Yet most animal welfare groups say NEVER say 'Free to a Good Home' as it devalues the pet as throwaway property .... hmmm

Hi BusterKitty,
I agree with the others, it is highly unlikely that the THS will do it for free. I've fostered an adopted for them within the last 6 months and while they will microchip cats in their care, they won't cover the cost for others, especially those that didn't come from their facility. Keep in mind the THS is run primarily on donations.

The Toronto Humane Society does not charge an adoption fee any longer - they waived that over a year ago. Now they just ask for a donation of whatever you wish when you adopt.

Hope that helps!

Personally, I don't really think that's comparable to someone who posts a sign for free kittens on the classified in a grocery store. THS has the same adoption and interview processes as shelters who do charge fees.
