Diarrhoea - not fun when it's contagious.

My poor dogs are sick. They might vomit once or not, but then have explosive diarrhoea which is dark and smelly. I have it under control, we have a product here called Scourban that knocks it on the head quick smart. I tried P*******(no name if it doesn't work) first and may as well pour it down the sink for all the help it was. Scourban has an antibiotic in it so must be prescribed by a vet. Anyway, if there is anything funny in this it's that it always has to to be the heaviest coated dogs that get this so that you have a mighty job of cleaning them up. LOL. I finally weakened where Toby is concerned and cut a poop track down the middle of his beautiful petticoats, but after I got onto another source of Scourban I really wished I hadn't done that. Now he's running around, fit and well, with a half naked rear end. Anyway, Cuddles is the latest patient, my whimpy cattle dog that I thought would chuck a hissy fit over being dosed with foul tasting medicine, but she was remarkably good actually. 4 down, and I hope the other 4 don't get it.
I looked up Cuddle's book to check her weight and saw where, about 11 years ago, we'd had this same problem and my comments on P******* versus Scourban had been the same. Wish the dogs luck. I'm thinking this could be something bought home from my last visit to the Vet clinic.

Oy! Contagious anything is bad... But you've certainly picked a smelly one!

Any idea what's causing it?

The worst we've had here was a virulent form of kennel cough that Cole brought home from the vet and passed around to everyone else. omd, the sound of 8 dogs hacking and snorking up snot all night is guaranteed to live on even in hazel's feeble memory!!

Hope Cuddles feels better quickly and it's run its course now.

Thanks, LP. My two oldest haven't had it yet and I'd rather they didn't but only time will tell.

To have one with it would be bad enough. Hope it stops spreading and your buddies get well fast.

Sorry, Hazel, missed your post. I've had kennel cough go through mine two or 3 times over 30 + years and the interesting part I thought was that the way each dog coughed the first time was the same way they coughed if they got it again. Snoopy sounded like a man with bronchitis, Sweetie was a classic case, any exertion and she'd cough till she chucked up white slime, whereas Rusty, believe it or not, didn't cough, but both times had tonsilitis. I actually blessed having it here the second time as Candy was just so bad , coughing every step, that we investigated further, took x rays, and found she had dilated cardiomyopathy. With medication I was able to give her another 3 years.

Yes, this is a smelly epidemic alright. Has to be bacterial you'd think seeing antibiotics do nothing for viruses, and what we find is that although the dosage should be twice a day for 5 days, just two or three doses has them over it. So, not a major worry, though they do feel poorly, right off their food.

Update on my fur kids.

My four sickies are fine again and so far no sign of the others getting the diarrhoea I'm pleased to say, but of course we're watching them closely.

Goldfields, sorry I missed this, but I'm glad to hear the first four are better and the other four are so far fine. Fingers crossed it stays that way. My two have been taking turns having runny poops this past week, but I think with us it's stress from hubby being away. He'll be gone for six weeks, I hope the girls get over this before then!!

Thanks Dog Dancer. One of the remaining four vomited a couple of times today so he may be in for it perhaps and it'd be wonderful timing if he was sick tomorrow, when I should be shopping. I'd just have to postpone it. I hope it is just stress with yours. You know when it's contagious, be it kennel cough, a gastric upset, ringworms etc. I always wish they would all get it at once if they are going to and get it over and done with.

I don't know why but I just thought of an old, old remedy they used here for horses with diarrhoea. Cornflour. Way back when I first got married I was going to give some to a crook horse but the packet totally disappeared. I searched high and low for it and had to give up. Now they were the bad old days before us having our dog yards, so the cattle dog we had then was chained up. When I went to feed him I noticed a funny mound of dirt beside his kennel and he'd taken the box of cornflour and buried it flush against the kennel, hiding it really well. Crazy mutt, it was just flour. LOL.
