Got a new camera! woo!

wooohHOOOO! i'm sooo thrilled!

I ended up choosing the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9 (review & specs here: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0702/07022705sonyh9h7.asp), after looking and handling a few different ones and not liking them very much (Canon G7, Nikon P5000 coolpix, a panasonic one, and another smaller Canon).

But this one... it's PERFECT for me! perfect size, grip, features, ease of use, speed, zoom, remote, takes audio videos, everything. finally.... a camera I love and can live with.

Hubby decided to keep the big Nikon D80 monster with 18-200 lens (instead of exchanging it), so everyone's happy. He had gotten that one for me for christmas but I really wasn't happy with it, felt overwhelmed and it was too big and clumsy. But now I'm happy with my girlie-cam... got a 2Gig card and the carrying case, I'm ready to GO!!

Battery is charging now so I'll start snapping photot tomorrow, or tonight... wooo! beanies by the sea, soon!

hehe, you're gonna have to learn yourself how to take pics, I reckon. There aren't too many automatic settings on there.

Actually prin, it has both manual and automatic modes so i'll be ok... it's soooo user-friendly and lets you make all kinds of mistakes that it corrects for you... love, love LOVE it!

oh no, it has TONS of features but sooo easy to use! can't wait for the reviews to come out but really, as long as it feels good in my hands... not too heavy, not too big, not scared of dropping it in gloved hands and windy weather (canon lost on that front, almost dropped the camera in the store it was so slippery ), and i can use it with one hand which is super handy.

look in the specs, it has

• Auto
• Program
• Shutter Priority
• Aperture Priority
• Manual
• Scene

under "scene" you have a variety of modes to choose from, from landscape to sports to macro - OH it has a great macro feature too! woo!

Yeah, Aperture priority and shutter priority are considered manual settings.. Program is usually auto with more manual features.. What I mean is there's no "landscape" or "portrait" settings (other than in the scene thingy) that do it all for you. You still have to know how to set the aperture and shutter to get the shot you're looking for.

Custom Image Presets
The Sony H9 has a host of scene modes that are spread between the mode dial and the “SCN” menu. The “SCN” position on the mode dial has a menu with Twilight, Beach, Snow, and Fireworks scene modes – the typically less frequently used settings. The more common presets are located directly on the mode dial: Landscape, Twilight Portrait, Advanced Sports, Portrait, and High Sensitivity. The abundance of scene modes along with the manual, automatic, and movie modes makes the mode dial a flurry of icons. It is quite crowded, so it takes more than just a quick glance to find what you’re looking for.

While the other scene modes are found on the older H5, the new Sony H9 includes a new advanced sports shooting mode. This preset combines a 2 fps burst with a tracking auto focus mode that predicts where the action is moving. This is good for sporting events like track and baseball where the athletes move in predictable patterns. The mode worked well in the convention center; I panned as attendees walked by the Sony booth and they remained in sharp focus in the pictures. The only downside to this mode is that the burst lasts only 4 shots at a time.

it's NOT as good as an SLR camera, for sure!! but for my itty-bitty uses, it's perfect

battery is all charged up and tonight i'll play around with it a bit... tomorrow we have a definitive date at the park with a lovely neighborhood akita girl (she's 4 months younger than maika and the girls met before, they loooved each other) so do expect some pics. but not tonight, the bean-mom is taking a break from her crappy experience with public transportation

Well the "woo" has turned into a major "boo"!!

the camera is going back to the shop... on paper it's perfect but in reality it's super crap! took 180 pics today under different settings and of the 12 i kept, they are STILL crappy, blurry, full of noise. i am soooo pissed and disappointed... missed a major opportunity to take some awesome akita photos, the kids all had a ball and truly got along amazingly. *****!!

so another trip back to Simon's tomorrow at lunchtime, looks like I'll be stuck getting the Nikon D40X. I didn't want the bulky SLR body but man, if that's what it takes to capture action shots well than so be it. Just hope they'll let me exchange the camera :sad:

I have the Sony H5 and also was disappointed with the action shots but then I discovered a way to make it somewhat better!

I set it of course to the action setting (little man golfing) but also I set it to BRK which is on (the H5 at least) in between the shutter button and the setting dial, it has Normal, Multi burst and Bracket and it's the Bracket that seems to work best.

It takes a series of 3 shots in a row and works best outside in the daylight.

You may want to give that a try and see if it works for you, I mean obviously it's not as good as a DSLR but the smaller size and comfort factor are important too, I find that other than the action shots over all the camera is pretty good!

speaking with the camera shop guy, he thinks the camera i had might have been a lemon... i mean it was soooo bad, colors all washed out, none of the setting worked... even at the hightest rez, the images were all pixelated! full of noise... and nevermind that it could not focus on anything. oh well.

I got a Nikon D40X instead, with the 18-135 lens which is more than enough for my needs. Didn't want an SLR camera but really, they are the best for action shots and crisp clear photos... battery is charging now, hope to take some photos later

It's funny because Sony makes the sensor on the Nikon. (According to your website thingy: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spec...nikon_d40x.asp )

So in the end, what was wrong with the original Nikon?

Sorry to hear about your trouble with the H9. I gave up waiting for it to come out and bought a Pentax slr instead. You mentioned you didn't like the bulk of the slr. Have you looked into a compact 18-200 or 18-300, they are about the same size and available through London Drugs for about $250. Good luck with the new camera.
