any advise
Hi two weeks ago my one year old scottie died when coming round from her anneasthesia she has a heartattack, she went in to be spayed, the next day i commented how my westie was copying her head shaking, isn;t that strange his copying her he misses her i thought, another week passed and his doing it all the time, he has been sleeping alot looking depressed but i thought it was because he was missing rosie (the scottie dog) then one morning his head is going really mad so i take him to the vet and explain and he has an ear infection and has antibiotics and cleaning solutions, but Rosie has shaken her head like this for what seems months, did she have this only much worse the answer to this is most probably yes, what i need to know is would this put her body temperature up and put her at risk for the surgery, i just need to know, as i,m desperate to understand, i,m not blaming anyone , but i wish the vet had looked at her like our doctors do us before surgery, i took her three weeks previously for an eye infection it kept reoccuring would this be why, does anyone have any answers?
thanks JJ |

A vet would not normally put a dog through a major procedure such as spaying without the animal being 100% healthy, so I'm surprised that they went ahead. You need to ask your vet this question, about a fever before/during surgery. You deserve answers, don't let them shrug you off. I'm so sorry this happened. It must still be in shock. Give your westie lots of love, he's in shock too. And plenty of good food to build up his immunity.

Some dogs have chronic ear infections and still go through surgery fine. If we had waited for my old lab to be rid of the ear infections, she would have been 14, unspayed with fatty tumors all over her body. IMO, it wasn't the ear infection.
The head shaking though could have been a factor if it was a serious neurological problem. Had you mentioned it to your vet before? If she doesn't shake when you're at the vet, the vet has no way of knowing. |

thanks
Thanks to you who replied to my very confusing thread. My westie seems so sad i am loving him to the point where i say this is to much, i am over protecting him, but his so sad, my friend came round the other day with her westie, whom mine has never taken any notice of, and he just didn,t stop playing with her, so obviously he misses his play mate and is now desperate for company. i am not ready to get another dog yet i,m still grieving, and i,m planning a big move so i think its better to wait, any ideas? oh i,m going to see if i can get a rescue scottie in memory of my rosie (when the times right.), she would like that i, m sure. thanks to all, please give advise if u can, these pets are my first and i,m forty years old and learning.

Sometimes we have to do what is right for you furbaby. When Sophie died in June, my other little dog howled strait for a day. I know it was fast but we got a 6 year old shih tzu within 24 hours. It helped Missie and it helped me. The grief is still there even today. But seeing Missie happy and healthy is the best thing I could have done. Missie had lost 2 companions in her short life and she bonds really hard with the other dogs. Look in your heart. you will know what to do. I am so sorry for your loss.

Can you and your friend get together several times a week until you can a permanent buddy for your westie?

I think your westie really needs a companion. How long before you are making your big move? And, how big of a move is it?

moving
I am moving to the uk in january, i had had both of the dogs six month quarentine blood test done so they could enter with their passports, but if i got my westie a companion now , it wouldn;t be able to travel with us untill his blood had been clear for six months, i would be back to square one then with two miserable dogs, so i thought i would wait till weve settled in our new home and get a rescue dog. i am doing my best to take valentine (my westie) everywhere i can with me but, its not always possible.

Aww, that does pose a bit of a problem. Poor Valentine, I guess the visits with your friend's dog will have to do plus lots of attention from you.
