Sardines in tomato sauce...good or not?
Hi everyone,
I like to feed my indoor and outdoor cats sardines once in a while. Maybe 2 or 3 times a month. I usually get the kind in tomato sauce, since it's the ones I eat myself and we all share a big can I was told by a friend that it may not be a good idea to serve them the kind in tomato sauce, since it may be too acidic for them, and that it would be better to rinse off the tomato sauce before serving it to them. My cats, both indoor and outdoor seem to like the tomato sauce, and I did not notice any sign of malaise after they eat them. What is your opinion on the matter? sandyrivers

I'll wait for better food experts but my first instinct is that there's likely stuff in there that's bad for cats....
Maybe provide a link to the ingredients?

This web site says to keep tomatoes away from cats. I love sardines in tomatoes sauce and would love to have some with you. I am not able to find them in a grocery store. If ever want to know ifs food is safe for your pets you can look on line or ask your vet, they might know the answer. |

Hello Sandyrivers:
I had a discussion with my vet years ago in regards to sardines as a treat for my cats. The vet's reply was to stay away from any flavoured sardines - ie. tomato or mustard sauce, etc. and if you are going to use the sardines as a treat, use only sardines packed in water. Never use "oil packed" sardines. And use them sparingly as you are doing now with the tomato flavoured ones. One other thing she recommended not using as a treat was canned Anchovies. They have a tendency to do a number on the digestive system. If you use Anchovies at all, it is to be extremely small. Just a taste - about half the size of a fingernail of the little finger. Anchovies can be toxic to cats. The article that Barkingdog sent is a very good article.
