Terrified of Storms

My 3 year old female bichon cross is absolutely terrified of storms. I have purchased several OTC pills for calming her down, but they do not work sufficiently well to help alleviate any of her anxiety. I have heard that Chamomile tea would help, and wonder if any one out there has heard of that, or if you have any other home remedies for this problem.
Thanks
Doricquine

Storms and dogs

I have two dogs that are scared to death of storms-lightning and thunder. The other night our 100+ hound of the Baskerville's slept in bed with us along with the poodle, who could care less about storms-she sleeps with us every night and Daisy who also could care less about storms and sleeps with us every night as well as two cats who sleep with the dogs just to tic them off.-You know how SIAMESE are.
The hound will try to hid under anything too small for her to fit at the first clap of thunder. We have found nothing that will calm her down except sitting with her and either holding her or scratching her ears.
Another of our rescues is afraid of storms and that is "Angie" She was chained up in a garage for the first year of her life and the storms scared her to death as a puppy. She never got over it but now curles up with the White German Sheperd for comfort in my shop when it storms.

I remember seeing a dog show along time ago and this lady had a problem with her dog being afraid of storms also, The doggie therapist used a recording of a storm at low volume until the dog got used to it and increased the volume over time until the dog was used to hearing storms,It might be something to look into. Research or ask your vet if they have heard of this kind of procedure but i wouldn't try it on your own without checking into it first...Just a suggestion...

I'm not gonna get into the pill part, but your dog can be desensitised.

Get a tape recording of a thunderstorm begin playing it on LOW very very LOW.

Play games, give treats and do some obedience training....over the course of a few weeks (doing this three / four times a week for 10mins at a time) graducally increase the volume.

Should work goodluck

I have that problem w/our Thor. He was very abused before we rescued him. He's scared to death of thunder, rain. He shakes so bad and he climbs up onto your lap. (yes he is a pittie mix).

I don't know what else to do but to comfort him during the storms.

The other day he was scared and following me around and wouldn't leave my side, I looked outside but the clouds weren't gray/black. So I knew that a storm was coming our way, granted it didn't reach us till about 2 hrs later, but he still knew.

I think deerclan is on to something with the desensitization. Record a storm on a tape recorder then periodically play it for your dog at low levels to start. while the dog listens, reward her for sitting or completeing a task while the storm plays.

Gradually increase the volume. Make sure the reward is something the dog loves.

I think this can work...do others agree?

duhh...I just reread the post to discover Luba's answer...doh! sort of the same as this one.
