Grr Has Hot Spots
Hi there,
One of my cats was spayed about a week ago and now she has hot spots on her belly and up towards her head. I purchased one of those plastic cone collars to prevent her from licking at the spots further. I cleaned the spots with hydrogen peroxide and put hydro-cortisone cream on the spots. Will the spots go away on their own or should I take her to see the vet? My only problem with seeing a vet right now is that I am completely broke. Are there things I can do at home that would make the spots go away? Any advice would be great because I'm really worried. |

I would stop both the peroxide and the cortisone cream. Peroxide damages even healthy tissue, so it might be contributing to the problem. The cortisone cream will inhibit the inflammation response which is all part of healing. It almost sounds like she's picked up a skin infection?
Honestly, I think I'd be calling the vet and at least talking on the phone to see what he suggests. Do you need to take her in for stitch removal soon? Maybe your vet will give you a break and treat the consult as part of the spay. But it does sound like another vet visit is in order. She may need antibiotics to clear up the problem

She has dissolving stitches and the spay was done at the humane society on a subsidized program. I have another cat that was spayed at the same time and she hasn't been experiencing any problems.
I have no money, so I have no idea how I'm going to afford vet care. |

Claw it wouldnt hurt to give the humane society a quick call. It doesnt sound life threatening and I am wondering if she is just having a reaction on her skin to coming into contact with something? some cats react to plastic or certain metals?maybe its simply something like that?
I also think they would want to know in case there is a skin type infection that could be going around at their location? They may be able to offer you some suggestions on treatment?

I called the humane society, but they are closed today. I left a message on their voicemail. I'm guessing I'll be hearing from them on Tuesday at the earliest.
I called my vet clinic and explained the situation, but the receptionist told me to call the humane society and wouldn't even tell me what the treatment would be for hot spots. She just said that it would be a $60 examination fee and that wouldn't include any drugs that they would want to give her. I do not have the money for that. I guess I'll just wait until the humane society calls me back. I'll keep an eye on the spots for now to see if they get worse or heal. Thanks for the help. |

Claw as long as she is not lethargic and is eating and using the box and showing no signs of pain I think you might be safe until they open again. I was also thinking maybe they treated her for fleas before you got her and she could be having a allergic reaction? just another thought.
I hate it when vets office's wont even offer you some advise to calm you and help your kitty. Sad really. If you havent been going to them for very long you may want to find another one that shows a teeny bit more compassion. How about sharing a picture with uis? would love to see what your gal looks like! Cindy

Grr is adorable! She looks like most kittys when they have the cone on! not fun but so worth keeping them from licking or biting the stiches. Keep an eye on her too because they become quite creative in trying to real the stitches when they get itchy! she will be happy in no time!!

She is learning how to eat and drink with the cone on. She just can't really groom herself. She licks the cone instead. Lol. I had a bigger size cone on her before, but one of the other cats was helping her out of it. Haha. Had to go exchange it for a smaller size. Now it's on snuggly and not coming off.

Hi!
Grr is such a cutie! So it doesn't seem to be an infection? That's good. I couldn't agree more with the comment Winston made about the vet's office. I've felt that more than once before, feels so cold so like "I-do-not-care-pay-or-go-away" Anyways she's really pretty and I'm glad the salts are working, keep an eye on the stitches though. Is she eating and pooping normally?

Even though the spots are getting better, I will probably make an appointment with the humane society clinic just to be sure that nothing serious is going on. I hate seeing my furry babies uncomfortable.

That's actually a wise thing to do. She'll most likely be fine you'll see but better make sure
