Looking for online pet supplies for sale that ships to Canada.

I don't know if this is or not. I have been searching for an orthopedic dog bed for my Finn. I have tried "Petsco" and a number of other web sites, but they don't ship to Canada! Where I live, we have one small pet store that has very little. I asked about ordering one in from them, and the guy never got back to me.

Anyone here order stuff online?? Any ideas??

You may want to check regular pet stores in Canada such as Petsmat, Petcestera, Superpet, Rens etc. Some of them allow you to order online and have it shipped anywhere in canada. Also, check for dog shows in your area and attend. Often they have many good, well priced vendors of pet merchandise. They may not have what your looking for with them, but they can probly get it or tell you where to get it and most will ship to your door. Anytime I have troulbe finding something I talk to the dog show vendors, they always have an answer!

I'm not sure if they sell beds, but Canadavet.com or is it .ca? anyway They ship in canada, thats how we got heartwrom meds this year. Good prices, fast delivery

PetEdge is US based but ships to Canada. I think the shipping charges depend on the size of the item and how far it has to ship. They have pretty good prices on all of their products. I linked to their orthopedic bed section.

Um there's a couple there... have you tried e-bay.ca also? Sometimes you can find great deals there and they usually ship to canada.

I shop online a lot and have had no problems at all. Just make sure you deal with a site that ships to Canada regularly, those usually know how to get you around paying duty.

A quick veterinarian note on online companies.

For many of the popular items that are not pet store available like Heartgard, frontline, etc... These are not obtained always from the original manufacturer. Instead they come from gray market distributors; meaning that veterinarians or people who purchased them from a licensed distributor are then selling them to the online companies.

What does that mean for you?
Sometimes nothing. But it does mean that the medication has passed through hands who are not licensed distributors so they may not have been stored in proper temperatures etc... (if your thyroid medication has sat in 110 degree F for two weeks in a veterinarians back lot before being shipped to the online pharmacy warehouse - is it helping your pet as much as if it was stored according to the label? Are they breakdowns in the medications? Can those be subtly harmful?). It also means that many products have all their warranties voided by the manufacturer. If there are side effects, reactions, recalls on the medication, with regard to the medication, there will be no support by the manufacturer.

My recommendation: If it is a regular product that you need to order, ask your veterinarian if they will price match. If you can get the same product at the best price and also have - great veterinarian relations, knowledge that the product hasn't passed through hands that may not be storing it properly, and full warranty on your medication exists - why not get it from your vet? Sometimes they will even ship it to you! We do, upon request for our clients.

I buy alot of pet supplies, supplements and horse dewormers through an American company called Jeffers. They have a huge selection, and excellent customer service I recommend them 100%. They ship according to weight to Canada (they are based in Alabama), USPS and in my experience the shipping is very reasonable, usually cheaper than Canadian shipping. You can order online @ www.jefferspet.com or order from a catalogue. They also carry livestock and horse stuff. Very, very helpful southern hospitality with this company.... awesome to deal with. Your parcel may be held for a small duty fee at your post office though, not a big deal IMO considering the advantages I've found in dealing with them. Good luck!

Just wondering, what is the difference between an orthopedic bed and a regular mattress? Have you considered a mattress, like a baby mattress? If that is an option, it might be easier to get through a company like Sears or even second hand somewhere in your area. My Bullmastiff and my Dane sleep on a double sized mattress (no box spring) and are very comfortable with bedding etc. I'm not sure about your situation or circumstances, but it could be an easier/cheaper option for your dog if he doesn't require a special ortho bed.

Thanks everyone!!! You guys are so helpful! The reason I was looking for an orthopedic bed is because they are recommended for dogs with Hip Dysplasia, aren't they? Or am I just falling into a great marketing scheme? Dr. Lee, you're advice would be greatly appreciated here Finn is only a little over a year old, but has severe HD. He does find it hard getting up from his regular bed sometimes, so I thought a better foam would do. I have to replace his bed anyway, because it's gone a little nobby, so I thought I'd go with an orthopedic one. I don't know if a regular mattress (ie; baby's mattress) would give him enough support.

Anyone else have experience with orthopedic beds???

Above is a link to Broadview Pharmacy, on Broadview Ave. in Toronto. It is a regular human pharmacy which also supplies some animal prescription items, such as flea and heartworm medicine. If you check their website you will find a list of all meds they handle. They may not carry the bed you want but you can ask them if they can order it for you. They do carry some items that do not require a prescription. This is a bricks and mortar building, not just an on-line company. I drive directly to it and walk in if I am visiting in the area.

I use this pharmacy for my flea and heartworm treatments and some other items. I have discovered that my own VEt, great as they are, charge way, way more than any other VEt in my area and they will not price match but they will write me a prescription. For the difference in price of flea meds alone, including shipping, I could afford six cats instead of four.

Dr. Lea's admonition to be wary of on-line ordering is well worth heeding. When I was searching for a less expensive source of pet meds I came across a site supposedly in Winnipeg with, so they said, a Canadian Veterinarian on staff. I asked for the name of the Vet, got it, checked it out and could not find the person licensed as a VEt anywhere in Canada or as a graduate of any Canadian VEt school. At last email the Manitoba Veterinary licensing body was investigating.

mammothoutlet is good. And as for me I bought pet supplies from crazysales. They have been dog suppies like beds and playpens, and cat supplies such as cat scratching post. Yep, I got both lovely cat and dog Buying pet supplies from a reputable shop is highly beneficial because their staff can advise you about the right type of products. You can also get more information about the usefulness or the efficacy of a household product chosen by you. If that one can't reach your region, you should another legit one. Because now there are many incompetent companies out there.
