Recommend Salmon Oil Supplement?
Hi, can anyone recommend a salmon oil supplement I can add to my dog's kibble? He's on Purina Pro Plan sensitive skin formula, which we're going to switch, and we add a bit of wet food to the mix. I used to add sardines but he stopped eating the food after a few days of that. I can try the sardines again but would also like to try an oil. I've also just started adding a raw egg to his food every 2 days. We've only had him a few weeks so we're still getting to know him.
He has a bit of dandruff and dry skin. We groom him regularly and he gets plenty of exercise. He's a Lab/Shepard mix, likely. His picture is in the dog characteristics forum. Thanks! |

you should ask your vet how much oil you should give to your dog , my vet told me to give my 20 lbs mini poodle mix 500 mg once a day. Too much oil is not good for dogs and could give it diarrhea . My dog is a piggypoo!

There are so many different oil supplements I am not sure if any one is better then another. I think it will come down to price differences. I agree that your first step should be to check with the vet just how much oil is okay to give. Some vets carry supplemental omega oils, check if yours does and what they charge. A lot of people choose to buy the fish oil supplements from pharmacies, puncture the gel cap, and squeeze that onto the food.

It find it hard to it get only half of the oil out of the gel cap , so this is why I think it best to find out how much fish oil is OK to give a pet before buying it. |

Thanks for the replies everyone. We're going to go with switching his food first. We got a sample bag and bought a small bag of Acana grain-free food. He liked his first bowl so far. He even ate some without having to mix it with wet food, which he wouldn't do with the Pro Plan.

Just an update, we ended up giving him PC Nutrition First grain-free and supplementing it with Dr. Maggie's oil. His coat looks great, nice and shiny, dandruff is pretty much gone and hardly any shedding.
