Introducing Loki

Hello everyone. I'm new here, but would like to introduce the newest member of my family to you. (I'll probably do intro threads for the other guys too). Loki just turned three months old yesterday and he already weighs 34 lbs! Loki is a Caucasian Ovcharka and he is the first CO that my vet who has been practicing for over 30 years has seen.

Wow, he is beautiful. What an incredible coat!
I am going to have to google the breed. I have never heard of it before. Did you stumble across this breed yourself, or do you have experience with them?
Oh yes, and welcome to the forum!

Beautiful puppy! Very rare, I also have never seen one in person before. SO cute though! You'll have to tell us more about him!

Alen (my other half) knew of them when he was growing up (he's Russian), but he never saw one before. He has wanted one for a long time, but he didn't know the proper name for them. I was bored one day about a month ago and started looking up different breeds and came across this one. I told Alen about it, but he wasn't interested because he didn't know the name. I finally got him to come and look at some pictures and he almost started jumping up and down when he saw the first one saying "That's the dog! That's the dog we were looking for a while ago! Remember? That's the dog!" I found a breeder in the US (couldn't find one in Canada) and got him flown in.

He's a handsome fella, that Loki! Love the name, too! Does he get into much mischief? If he does, I'll bet you just can't stay mad at the little munchkin! Look at that face!

Let's just say that the name is fitting. He knows he's cute and knows how to use it too!

The ears for this breed are cropped at approximately 3 days old. They were originally used to protect against wolves and other predators. Cropping the ears didn't give the predators something to grab onto and the dogs would suffer from repeated painful and bloody ear wounds. This way, the blood from an ear wound wouldn't run into their eyes and hamper their vision in a fight against a predator.

Loki is adorable Sheri. (Thanks for the email Chico)
CO's are indeed rare around here. My vet hadn't seen one either until he met Lukka three years ago. Now I am on to my second Caucasian, (Mishka) and I do love the breed. Would fill my house up with them if I had the $$$$.

He is adorable, but this breed is only for experienced owners! Train him well, and enjoy him!

Sorry, but I just noticed this post. I have a large breed dog already who has been through training. I have already started teaching Loki the basics and will put him in school as well. He's great and I already can't imagine what it would be like without him.

He goes to the vet tomorrow for his boosters and I'm eager to see his weight. He was 34 lbs when we weighed him at home about a week ago. Sigh, they grow up so fast.
