Just a question...dogs are natural carnavores and mad cow has been around for a long time....I haven't heard of a dog or cat contracting mad cow, mad fish, mad chicken or whatever from cat or dog food...I don't keep up with that anyways so if there have been cases, I'd really like to know.

Canines are carnivours. This means that their dietary needs can not be met by a vegetarian diet. My dogs eat raw chicken and raw beef hearts. Have yet to have an illness. Too many veggies makes them fart, so count me and mine out.

First of all, Thank you for all the wonderful enlightening links! *tipping my hat*

I feed raw because I know for a fact that processed food is not the way to go for 3 of my dogs. Other dogs will be different.

I homeworked my decision till I was spent from it. Many many moons of indecision and decision. (I'm a vegan) I've had to learn to come to terms with other critters dying so mine can feed. Granted, it will haunt me the rest of my life.

Well, this could quite possibly be the only thread on this board that has truly made me angry.

You dont want to eat beef, fine!

But dont try to shove it down other peoples throats.

Oh, and Mad Cow is present ONLY in the brain/spinal cord tissue. SO DONT EAT IT! Other than that beef is perfectly safe.

If you cant tell, my family produces beef. And although I believe that others are entitled to thier opinion, I get awfully tired of hearing how bad beef is. Its not. Unfortunately, due to opinions rather than fact, our family and many others, are unable to make a living. Our farm, that has been in our family for many years may soon no longer be.

Just the amount of links in the original post made my head spin!!

I found the opposite results for veggies and stinky farts/poops in dogs. My dog was eating Royal Canin, when she was younger, and her farts stunk a bit (ok...cleared a room). Her poops, although numerous, weren't so bad.
Now, she's on a Lamb/fruit/veggie diet and her farts are WAY better. You don't even notice them. Her poops, however....oh....Heaven help you if you're in the back yard with her while she's pooping. Picking it up has never been so difficult.

Personally I'm not a big meat eater, and can be very picky in the cut of meat I do end up eating. If it's not cut with a butter knife tender, I don't want it. But, if I could feed my dog food containing beef & chicken you bet I'd do it in a heartbeat! She eats a beef bone a week! (from a local cattle producer) He smokes them and sells them for $12 a bone. If Diamond could dance a jig for her bone you bet she would! She absolutely loves them. Deny a dog a food it would naturally eat, provided they don't get sick from it? Not in a million years.

Shan,I sympathize with you and your family, one of my sons live in Alberta and has told me of several bankrupt farmers.
Not ever having lived on a farm and knowing basically nothing of farming,I think farmers to survive have to step back and get back to what once was, eliminate feed made of animalparts, cows are not carnivores.
I feel elated every time I see cows grazing outdoors, the way it was meant to be.
Our dogs/cats ARE carnivores and cannot live a healthy life on carrots and broccoli, the solution is to invest a little more in good quality food,my cats will not eat anything I cook.
I am an animal-lover,maybe a bit of an activist, some would say I cannot be a hypocrite and eat meat, but I guess I am
It's a sad but neceassary fact animals will be killed to feed us,my only wish is that before they their day comes, they are treated with care and not as a meatproducing machines with no feelings.
Parts of Europe(I only know about France and Sweden)are way ahead of us in realizing what the tragic outcome can be in feeding cows animalparts and dangerous hormones. They also have much strikter laws in the treatment of animals destined for the dinner-table.

I am in agreement with you chico, as far as the no animal by products in feed. In fact, this process was made illegal in 1997. So the cows found with BSE were either born before 1997, or somebody out their isnt playing by the rules.

As far as Europe being ahead of us, I also agree with you,but maybe not in the exact same way. I think they are lightyears ahead of us as far as public perception goes. There are tons of Mad Cow cases in Europe. However, the media/public outcry is nowhere near as loud. I can only assume this is because the public has been well informed as to what they are eating, and what part of the animal is "dangerous". Sadly in our part of the world, the media plays such a huge role in our lives, that one misinformed journalist can change thousands, if not millions of minds.

There are several issues in this world that concern me. A couple of issues that concern me so much that I am quite vocal about them. Those issues are animal related. But I am NOT an animal rights activist.

I am not going to lecture people on why the should do things my way. What makes my life choices right for everyone else?

And I love chicken and beef. I will even it pork. However, I do draw the line at veal.

Hope nobody minds if I post a link. It has information about factory farming and also contains photos and videos. There just seems to be so many people (in general) who are unaware about the conditions animals are raised and kept in for food. For those of you who want to know more, here's the link: www.tryveg.com

See now I would have to say that the places that treat their animals inhumanely are in the minority. The majority of farmers count on those animals for their livelihood, so the animals get treated with great respect and have a good life before becoming sustanence for others. I know a few farmers, and would be hard pressed to find a mistreated animal on their farms.

Not all farms keep their animals in conditions that warrant a warning. There are many farmers who are noticing that the happier the animal, the better the milk, the better the meat, the more calves they have.

My personal beliefs follow:
Your site mentions cruelty free foods. I believe that ALL things living have a spirit. Animals & plants alike. To kill a plant is also a form of cruelty. Don't condem me for eating meat (and liking it) and I won't condem you for eating plants. This forum was not created to preach veganism to others.

I agree animals are carnivores and by taking meat out of their diet you are depriving them of all the nutrients that they need to grow and remain healthy. You can eat whatever you choose to, but your dog needs to eat meat and I have not heard of one case where an animal has died from mad cow by eating dog food or raw diet. I believe in what GS says I don't tell you what to eat and you don't tell me what to eat.

I do not see where in my post I came off as trying to preach veganism. I simply provided a link for those who wanted to more about this stance on factory farming. Nowhere did I tell anyone what to eat, nor do I ever try to. As long as you're content (morally, physically, etc.) with what's on your plate, that's what matters.

krdahmer, obviously your post was of opinion but I must point out that if you replace the word "farmers" with "puppy millers", it sounds very simular to something you'd hear in a pet store. It's great that you know "a few" farmers that that don't mistreat their animals, but IMO, chances are, that's not what is typical in the industry. One can see the way these animals are treated if they take a look at one of those transport trucks you see everyday on the highway. But then again, I guess people's definition of "mistreat" can vary.

Anyways, I can see that I won't be welcomed here. I did not post the link to offend, just to offer a take on the meat industry. Some will take info and hopefully look into it further, and some obviously will leave it.
Goodbye.
Jamie

Your previous post didn't mention feeding dogs and cats food made from animals or products derived from animals. You stated it was directed at people (in general)

I went and looked...that website is not for animals, rather to discuss the pros of people living a vegitarian diet.

I did not jump to any conclusions. If you want to preach the benifits of veganism, by all means, do so. But I think it better served in the "Off Topic" forum. Here's a link I like: The Canadian Cattlemen's Association.

I wasn't offended by your post at all. It was the first post that got my dander up. Actually, in the scheme of things, your post was very respectful. It was the other person that put in all those links to try to convert me into something I don't care to be. It is kind of like posting a billion links to try to convince me that I should be Catholic.

to the original poster ar9, your presentation of information was confusing and too difficult to warrent a full read, could you not simplify and give one or two good sites instead of the above, also a bit of an explanantion of your point, cause or intention would be really helpful in the confusion stakes, ie getting to your point a bit more.

i state i am vegetarian but totally respect the flesh eaters.
but-
mad cow disease is a condition that affects bovine, its name is bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). note the bovine, it does not say fish. although there is a similar disease humans can get it does not affect fish.
scientifically, factually there is no case ever of fish mad cow disease, it is not actually possible, a fish could get other disease but not that one.

although many dont like to admit it, a dog is a natural animal who requires different vits and minerals to humans, they cannot surivie healthily on a tofu diet. a dog should be fed meat as a source of many of the extracts needed to survive. if your dog approaches you and says 'look i dont like the meat thing' well fine, but as their brains have not evolved to do this i doubt their bodies have evolved to live on an extreme diet either.

farmers- when one cow is worth several thousand dollars, there is rarely a foolish farmer who will abuse it. i agree there is big companies that hurt animals, these are not average farmers, these are not family farms, they are corporate farms so to speak. do not harass the average farmer for the crimes of the big multi nationals. farming is very important, not only for survival but for historical and social factors, as are many other industries.
we cannot get rid of the meat trade, yeah right, my own family would probably eat me without a steak .
but we can raise the ethical and fair treatment of animals across the board, recently australia imporved its livestock trade laws, might not seem much to many, but for the animals and australian ethics it is just a huge change. that is how it is done, improve ethical treatment of animals, you cannot get rid of the industry so try thinking up effective and reasonable ways to improve the industry. you cannto make everyone vegetarian or vegan, you can jsut improve things. so lets not argue or post lots of links, lets do lots of research and find factors of the industry we could help change, lets all stop and have a good discussion on how various factors of industry can be improved.

and flesh eaters, dont ever, ever be ashamed of eating meat, or wanting meat, you are an animal (weather human ego likes it or not) and as animals have been raised and evolved on a omniverous diet and still like your meats, that is fine with me, i understand and what works for me i cannot expect to work for others (and dont forget you are majority in western world, we are still growing minority). be proud of yourselves and beliefs, eat meat, no probs just help us to improve ethical treatment of animals, but many of you are trying to do that already dont make yourself feel bad for your choices, you little animals you .

Melanie,a very good post.
Improving or eliminating factory-farms would be a good start, even the lowly little chicken suffers incredibly in factory-farms....but I am still and will probably always be a meat-eater.I wear and love leather and suede, now how is that for a number one animal-lover

I also live in Alberta and the BSE thing has just gone way too far. I never thought it would hit my dogs though!!! I am also feeding my dogs raw meat and they love it and need it. The day Alberta got its first case of BSE, I went to good old Peter's Drive In! (For those of you not in Calgary, it is only the BEST place to get burgers, fries, onion rings and milkshakes!!!!) I support our farmers and can't wait for the border to re-open to good old Alberta Beef!!!!!!

i have a theory (one of many ) about wearing animal skin. but this is only applicable to animals bred for meat, not for handbags etc. i believe if an animal is to die we must respect that animal and its sacrifice, and that to me involves the use of all the animals skin, bones, cartalidge or whatever the lot. if we could produce our bags and shoes from these sources it is a very ethical way to do it and also shows respect for the animals.. thus solving another problem of the meat industry and not wasting any useful products in the process which is unnatural and disrespectful.

I was going to delete my earlier post,in writing it,it sounds like I am some rebellious child
Mel you explained it in a more mature way
On the other hand, any clothing made from wild animals, trapped or hunted for their fur, should in my view be abolished....but that is my opinion and I would never force my opinion on anyone else,I just would not wear fur.
As for the meat-eating bit,we have cut down on red meat, but mostly for health-reasons,but I still prefer beef to any other meat...fish,chicken is just not the same.
Another"beef"I have, is with the way grocery-stores cramp lobsters and trout in small tanks for the customer to pick and buy it's victim live.
I will make long detours just to avoid seeing the tanks.
Boiling lobsters alive is a horrible practise, they are not cute and furry, but nevertheless a living creature..
