Can dogs and cats be taught to get along?

Lucky used to like everybody - including cats. Then we visited my cousin who had two cats. The cats trained Lucky to chase them and now she is very agressive towards cats.

My new girlfriend has two cats. Lucky hates them and they hate Lucky. Getting rid of either the cats, the dog, or even the girlfriend are not options.

Any suggestions as to how to train the dog and cats to get along?

I have found that if you give the cats somewhere of their own to go away from the dog, you'll find they will hang out there most of the time. Designate half the house and put a baby gate up so the cats can jump over but the dog can't. They may even eventually make peace.

Amazing how the cats taught the dog how to chase them. Smart little things, aren't they?
I have six cats in the house and two dogs. The dogs had never lived with cats up until three years ago. Then they got a crash course on how to live peacefully with them. But, you have to do the introductions properly or it just won't work. As Marty11 said you have to have a safe place for the cats. It doesn't have to be half the house. It doesn't have to be even a room. What you need for the cats is a few places where they can get up high. A tall scratching post, shelves built up high on the wall, or even on top of the kitchen cupboards.
Here's a few sites to read to help out..........
