How Many Exterior Doors Does a House Have to Have

to be legal or up to fire codes? Is there a minimum? I'm just wondering cause our old rental place just had 1. There was another but it was blocked off and a patio door that didn't open. Now we have 2 doors a front and back which to me is normal. Our mobile home had 3 doors, one we didn't use as an outside door but it still had 2, one at the front and one at the back.

Something tells me that our last place is/was very unsafe and shouldn't have been rented out in the first place.

I found the following information from the Saskatchewan government:

http://www.cpsp.gov.sk.ca/A16Advisory.pdf

A house typically requires only one exterior exit door. If it is necessary to travel more than one storey to reach the level served by the exit door, additional doors or large openable windows must be provided.

Sounds like if it is only a one storey building only one exterior door is required. If more than one storey either addition exterior doors or large openable windows would be required.

Thanks! I always thought it might be a safety issue in case of fire

I know that for basement apartments you need to have at least 2 exits in case of fire but it can be a large window, doesn't have to be a door. I would assume some thing similar for houses but I'm not sure if fire code is municipal or provincial, different cities might have different codes.

If that first place had windows and was on the first floor, it would well have been legal to rent, pattymac. A lot of code is written so that as long as there is egress (say, through a window), one door is efficient. It would depend on what the regulations were for that area.
