Supermarket meat vs. organic/hormone free
I would like to buy certified organic and hormone free, free range and natural food for Phoebe, but it's not that easy to find and it's a lot more expensive. Is regular supermarket chicken, turkey, beef or pork bad for her? They are probably all given hormones and fed with food grown with symthetic chemical pesticides and herbicides, but is it cause for concern? Perhaps bison, rabbit, duck, and other meats like that are usually farmed under more natural conditions, but they are also more expensive.
Does anyone have any info on this tipoc? |

Very legitimate concern you have going there.
I think if you can afford to feed your dog with organic meats go for it. For many of us, it's just not a realistic hope. I'll go to my grave saying the steroid laced beef is still better than any processed kibble in a bag though. Cheers MM

had a quick look at these
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosher http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halal what makes a type of meat kosher or halal has nothing to do with it being organic, free range or whatnot... the only things i got from the articles are that the animal cannot be a carnivore, must be fit, disease free, and slaughtered in a certain a fashion. does anyone here buy/know the prices on organic meats? I had a look at them a while back and the prices were outrageous. so outrageous that i cant even recall. |

Have you checked out any local farmer's markets?

Im not sure what type of meats you are referring to but we feed our girls free range hormone free chicken necks, backs, and turkey necks. Costs of the food is 35 cents per pound (USD). I was paying almost double that but was buying from a meat market and managed to find out the name of the poultry farm that actually processes. I now purchase direct from them 100 pounds every 2 weeks.

After chatting with a Rabbi about what kosher really means (at least with chicken) I was told that it is important what they are fed. It can still have hormones or antibiotics I guess but they do feed them differently than regular old lilydale fryers.
