Creams for cats?

Hi everyone,

My cat Baci has some dry spots on his skin (He's a Sphynx cat so he's completely bald...like me ) likely because of the heating in our place . Both my wife and I are also feeling itchy due to dryness and for next year we will look into a good humidifier.

But for now can anyone recommend a moisturizing cream that would be safe?

Thx!

Hi Marko:

Have you given any thought to organic coconut oil? I know it works well on humans and we have a neighbour who applies it to his dog's feet in the winter time. It contains no hazardous chemicals and I have found it works on crusty old coggers.

As far as Baci is concerned, is there any possibility that he might have an intolerance to a protein in his food?

What about Musher's Secret , I put it on my own hands when they got cracked in winter , and put it on my last dog paws and nose , he would lick it off his nose . It not greasy .

Can you give cats oils supplements for their skin? We've had good luck with omega-3 and omega-6 oil supplements for the dogs when they get itchy in winter--we've used salmon oils and blends like Lipiderm. Just a nightly squirt in their evening meal and they're good to go.

I'm not sure what would be cat-appropriate, though...

hello again Marko:

Thank you HRP for reminding me - I'm so used to using fish oils I never thought of it.
Have used Salmon Oil off and on for years. I've also used Krill Oil, but found it too hard to use, but it does help tremendously on the cats and doing away with dandruff as well.
I found this article Marko, a while back on the Little Big Cat web site and thought it was well worth the read. There's a lot of good info regarding Essential Fatty Acids that the majority of us don't know or are not familiar with.

Hope this helps you out.

We use pure coconut oil, we have used mushers secret and that works very well. I think what I found best though was Vitamin E oil. A little dab goes a long way. It comes with a little dropper and you just dab it on the area..
Fish oils are a great idea too!

Awesome suggestions everyone
Time to start the research and then do some cat-cream shopping

Thanks for the link Reg! - Baci has multiple issues and yup some are food related..His skin was way worse at the beginning and is much better due to a food switch.

I really think this is simple dryness due to heating...

I give coconut oil on a spoon once a day for Jazz to lick as her tongue tends to dry out. It is also good to rub on the skin using only a little as it is a bit runny.

Extra light olive oil (light yellow colour not dark green) is the best moisturizer I've ever found for me. I use it every day. After showering I apply oil to my feet then socks on and I'm good to go! Every time I clean sinks or do dishes I rub the oil liberally on my hands then put on rubber gloves. There's no perfume or chemicals and you can eat it too

Try putting a container of water up on a high shelf, the air will suck up moisture from container as needed.

I noticed the lack of humidity in my 2nd floor apartment was making my scalp itchy & Lilly was scratching around her face so I put a plastic container of water up on top of the entertainment center & marked the level w/a sharpie. When I looked at it a week later I noticed the water level was lower than where I started & neither of us have been itchy since I put it out. I've noticed this same issue in this apartment in years past.

Thanks GK - I've used this low tech humidity solve for myself years ago. ... completely forgot about it though.

and I was gonna just spring for a couple of humidifiers for next year since heating season will be over in about 2-3 weeks....

(Montreal gets way dryer than Van because it's much colder and so we use more heat).

But this is a simple temp solve that just might help a bit.
Unless the buggers climb the entertainment system and drink all the water -

thx again for the input everyone!!
