I was wondering if the vaccines messed up your dog's immune system and now that is causing the allergic reactions you are seeing.

I would just start fresh. No meds, simple whole food diet and check out this holistic vet out of Vancouver. Just Google Dr. Peter Dobias. He really sells some great supplements and also has Thuja, I think, for treating vaccinosis.

My dogs were the most healthy when I followed his advice. He has free advice and answers questions on his blog, facebook etc. His supplements are a little expensive but they really work and imagine you will pay less in the end following his recommendations than a conventional vet has to offer.

It sound to me like his immune system is in overdrive and what was the trigger - vaccination. That's when it all started for you. Do the HAIR Q test from Dr. Dobias. It will tell you if there is heavy metal toxicity and follow his online protocol for recovery.
Happy to see another from Winterpeg here. I cannot stop her meds. It keeps being recommended, but then no one gets any sleep as she cannot breath. Let me stress she is not on steroids - just apoquel, ketoconozole, and maletonin and antihistamine after a playtime (sorry about spelling) Her derm vet that flies in from Ontario (because we don't have a proper specialist here) has given me a raw recipe to try. We are just in the midst of moving into a house which is taking a load of work to prep for allergies. Had the duct work cleaned, working on caulking all the baseboards, we might put an electro static system in the furnace yet, but I was concerned about ozone. She is even worse now, but the house is under reno, all we can do is isolate her. I honestly don't think it is food at all. She is allergic to the mold spores that are in the everyday air and get worse when it rains - and we have had a rainy summer, plus now it is fall. She is not showing signs that it is a food allergy - and she has cleared up completely and been off meds twice while on this diet (still going to do raw once I have a kitchen). We give her filtered water (not Winnipeg questionable water). She has not had vaccinations in 3 years (just titers) I will totally check out your recommendations!!! Thank you! I have joined a couple facebook pages with allergy suffering dogs. It seems that no matter what people do (holistic, raw, all natural, no vaccinations, no meds) the allergies are never cleared up. No one has a solution that actually works more than a couple months. I do wonder how much is hype and coincidence with both natural and western medicine. For now, I will continue isolation and meds, and switch to raw once the kitchen is sorted. And keep looking and trying. Oh! and I have started with baking soda in her food. I read a lot into this. Some say it is poisonous, some say it is amazing, medical documents say it is fine but not proven to work, but so far... I'm just glad it doesn't cost $80 - no difference. Thanks again.

I would get a full thyroid panel done on the dog, not just a T4 carrier. Could be hypothyroidism, there's alot of weird symptoms that come along with it that mimic allergies and such. Tiredness/lazy is another big symptom. Weight gain?

she is only tired with antihistamines and steroids, weight is fine since we got her off of Atopica and lowered Ketoconozole. She doesn't have the symptoms. The last 4 times we have gone to the vet have been such a waste, she get super sick from the dirty environment, and it takes her days to recover with lots of meds. The previous posters website "google dr dobias" It is a very interesting read.
I am have always pressured the vets not to cover up the symptoms, lets find out the cause, but they get cranky with me. And I know for myself when I cut out man made food I feel and look fantastic, especially when eating the right fats. Of course dogs are different, but it looks like that is where we are going to go with this. Once I have a kitchen.. now my kitchen reno has been delayed until Monday - driving me crazy!
My other thought, is the elimination has given her deficiencies. There is no way one kibble can have everything she needs to be healthy, despite what the bag and vet says, it just isn't logical.

Thumbs up Update with raw food

Wow, raw really helped! She has been on Raw for 5 days now. She looks way better, her energy is up. No more Ketoconozole, Apoquel is halved (just because we are nervous to just quit it - by next week we hope to stop). She looks younger, and her oily coat is cleared up. She is starting to blow her under coat in a normal way which she hasn't done for years. She is still a wee bit itchy, but I'm not sure if that is from her undercoat shedding. I cannot believe the difference. It's like a dream where your old dog comes back young and spry. After years of battling allergies and enormous vet bills... just a balanced raw diet... really?
Next test - a walk and see if she flares up after 15 min. Maybe even a game of FETCH until my arm falls off!
This seems too good to be true. She is on Purfectly Raw pure pork balanced frozen raw. And I added organic wild blueberries. That is it.

Yay! Is pork also a novel protein to her? That might have helped as well.

No, pork isn't novel. Although she hasn't had it since she was about a year and a half old. We are now down to 1x 16mg Apoquel a day and she is still doing well.

Thinking about it, we also installed an electro static filter in the furnace. I wonder if it is changing the air quality in the house. Although the house is not air tight and she does go outside to do business.

We will dare to try a walk on the weekend and see how she reacts.

We are doing our best to go back to normal gradually.
