Red face We got another dog!

So as of today, Heidi will be staying with us for an as yet undetermined amount of time. For those who don't know, she is DH-to-be's dog. He got her when he was 16, and she became the family dog when he went to universty.

She's 10 and age is catching up with her. We took her to the vet today and discovered she is 20 lbs. overweight (that didn't surpise us), and had run out of her stilbesterol Rx for urinary incontinence and his parents didn't refill it so she had been peeing all over herself. She also developed a second and third lipoma over the past year. They're still pretty small, but we need to get this weight off her and discourage them from growing!

We've discussed the importance of good food, execise and keeping on top of her meds many times with them but it obviously isn't sinking in, so we brought her here. We got new meds for her, will start her on glucosamine and salmon oil, help her lose weight and put her on a healthy food.

To alleviate family conflict we're calling her a "foster" for now.....just long enough to give her some much needed structure and TLC. But it could become permanent IMO.

She's kind of anxious so far with the change in environment, but at least she knows us well. She's trying to dominate Kailey but our good girl just walks away and ignores her. I'm sure she'll tell Heidi when enough is enough though. Heidi is completely ignoring Rupert, which is good for a dog that has never lived with cats. He walked right up to her and gave her a smack on the nose though - I think he wanted to tell her right away that there will be no messing with him! That little dude is fearless.

Anyway, I will post pics a little later, but there is an album in my profile of her as well.

And the family continues to grow....I must be crazy. She is a big undertaking, between her health and the manners she completely lost since J. moved away from home.

How exciting! I'm sure the old dear will settle in soon--she's going to love it there!

Rupert is such a feisty guy! I wonder what she thought of his greeting!

Ah...it sounds like Heidi went to the right spot for some TLC!

Good girl Kailey and Rupert sounds like he's got everything under control.

Best of luck Chaser and remember...we're all here for ya!

Awww, good luck with her. I remember you saying you were thinking about taking her in to get her better. I sure hope it works out for you!! You are such a nice person to do this for FDH's pup!

Thank you - but it isn't entirely selfless I assure you! She is a royal pain in the butt right now and needs a lot of work, but I've known her since she was a puppy and I absolutely adore her.

I'm glad you and DH-to be, took her. If his parent's weren't able to keep up with her meds and keep her at a better weight, it's best she stays with you guys.

Rupert. OMG, that's too funny.

I don't think I will ever meet another cat like him....the way he walks around like he owns the place is priceless. Heidi keeps running away from him! And I had been worried about her being nice....go figure

We must be crazy We're keeping her registered in her hometown though and she will techncally be a foster while she's here.....we'd be in trouble with the City otherwise.

I am glad you got Heidi, she's a very pretty old girlhopefully she'll get better under your care
I have no doubt she will. She'll be eating Orijen, getting glucosamine and salmon oil, and we're doing a short course of anti-inflammatories to help her with the pain of slowly increasing her physical activity. She's already got a pretty new collar and had a bath and a good brushing yesterday to boost her self-esteem Plus there are more dog toys in our house than she's ever had in her whole life!

Poor Kailey is falling all over herself trying to get Heidi to play with her too! She's doing play bows all the time but Heidi just doesn't get the whole concept. Hopefully she'll catch on the more she sees Chase and Kailey doing their thing.

I don't think a dog couldn't thrive at our house.....I'm such a homebody that all my free time is theirs!

Thank you! That's something I have always loved about her.....I would do anything for this dog. We almost lost her during the pet food recall and we were both just devastated. She's a strong girl to have bounced back from that and she's still a puppy at heart.

we can increase the time we have with her by giving her the best of everything now. I know without a doubt she wants to keep going....she just needs someone to help make it comfortable for her again.

She's a beauty!! I'm sure Kailey and Chase will have her playing in no time! Cass and Cole took Macie into their capable paws and taught her to play when she first came. It as so much fun to watch her open up!

That could take Heidi a while....her socialization (with dogs) has been crap. She is a VERY dominant girl and has no idea how to interpret other dogs or play in a non-aggressive way.

DH-to-be was always her best buddy, but when he was 16 he didn't realize the importance of socialization. He's really kicking himself for it now, but I've tried to tell him it's all fixable with time and patience. She's not aggressive....just cranky and clueless really.

She LOVES people though and really is an absolute sweetie pie.....she deserves the best!

D&J moved their wedding up to June 12, 2009 - you'll be able to come see Rupert & Heidi when you're out this way for the wedding!

You guys are great for what you are doing for her, you are catching up to my house all you need is 3 more cats
No more cats!!!!! They'll destroy our house! The only cat I want is Rupert, and he's so awesome because he's half dog
