They're beautiful, Melinda! So happy all went well! What color was the Poodle supposed to be...cuz unless it was black, I'm thinking maybe the Dad wasn't a poodle...

three have very wavy hair, no idea about the dads color but the black could be the lab in her, brinas dad waas a yellow lab and mom was a yellow lab/sheperd she had a brown coloring and all 8 pups were black

Glad all went well. And they are cute whatever you decide to call them. I noticed one of the pups had webbed feet..so that one at least took more of the lab half. And sometimes lab pups can have a few curly hairs at the start. Also depends on what all mom has in her too. From the people you got her from..no telling.
All that matters is they are in good hands now, everything came out ok...and that I "know" those pups will find loving furever homes, and that skyla is in a MUCH BETTER furever home now.
Hats off to you !

alrighty, a question, mom won't clean the pups half the time, by this I mean to help them eliminate waste, so my niece is taking over the practice, should she be doing it every two hours? the mom does..but only to one or two at a time then leaves the rest, never the same ones so its not like she's favoring some over the others, I think she is just too young

Wow! Poor mommy! Glad she's in a safe caring place now, she's gorgeous! I'll talk to Nathan, but I know he'll never go for another dog right now, especially with a wee baby of our own. I'd take one in a heartbeat though, if it were up to me

Sorry I can't help you with your question Melinda, have you tried calling the vet to ask maybe? So good to see Mom did well and the pups look wonderful. They're so cute.

oh and she's also gathering stuff animals, she's up to 6 now (one per baby???) she never had any interest in them before, not even if you tossed them and these are ones belonging to my nieces 5 yr old, she has to stand up at the dresser to get them off the shelf,

DogDancer, the vet seems to think that maybe because she is so young and that possibly she was taken from HER mom too young that she doesn`t really know what to do.

Some dogs & cats going through false pregnancies, or during nesting behaviours will collect stuffies, rolled up socks etc cuz they're about the same size as newborn pups/kits. Perhaps her mothering instincts are coming through stronger in certain areas & she's gathering all the "babies" in one safe place

she has plenty of milk, but my niece has to call her back to the birthing bed every hour and tell her to "lay down" so the pups can nurse, if she runs out of milk or continues not to look after them then I'll be bringing 3 here to bottle feed and allow brina to look after them for 3 weeks then hopefully bring them back to the mom, my niece is having a hard time keeping up with all the cleaning, not just of the bedding, but of the pups also. any comments about this is greatly appreciates.....yeah or nays for this plan?

Melinda I dont know the first thing really about pups but I am wondering if its just a teeny bit too soon. Maybe Mom is not quite getting what needs to be done. If you were to present the pup to be cleaned to Mom does she do it? I am wondering if she just doesnt know everything she needs to do??

Is your niece encouraging the mom to clean the pups or is she just doing it herself? I think the mama needs some encouragement. Most mamas will pick it up, there are very few that won't. However, of the ones that won't look after the pups it is usually the young mothers. Ack! This must be so frustrating for you and your niece!

You might be able to contact a local breeder that has good reviews and ask them very nicely if they might be able to give some of their expertise to help you out. Someone with lots of experience in whelping could really help you out right now. Maybe even see if there is an "expert" at the rescues or SPCA.

Just remembering a few things since I had a "Mom" dog about a hundred years ago.
We had the dog in a whelping box, but didn't have a safety ledge installed around the inside edge, and the Mom lay on a pup one night and it suffocated. She had 6.

Also, the Mom dog was about 9 months old, way too young, and she needed lots of help. I literally had to force her to lie down and nurse more often than she wanted to.

Maybe holding each pup to the Mommy's face will remind her that she has to clean them?
It's worth the trouble to keep trying to have them raised by the Mommy, but you will know when it isn't going to work out when the pups don't thrive.
Good Luck

They're all so adorable. Especially the little chocolate guy.

You and your niece are for taking this poor little momma in and giving her the best love she could ever have.

Extremely "weird" idea..but couldnt hurt..may help. A "dab" of penut butter on the pup's paticulars to encourage "licking" ....maybe that will "get mom in the habit of cleaning off the pups"..and "insticnt" will kick in after a while. after all if neice keeps doing "moms" job...mom will kick back and relax and say to heck with it.
I dunno....like i said..may be to weird...but here in this house..penut butter is the cure for nearly everything. Really..it is
