Info about a cat tattoo?

I'm checking to see if anyone has any info on where I could find info about a cat's tattoo? A cat showed up at the shelter and he has an ear tattoo which includes 3 letters followed by 3 numbers. The tattoo is clear and readable, it makes me think of a thoroughbred's lip tattoo, which is done with little dots.

The cat is not a particular breed, he's a sterile domestic type guy.

Any help would be great!

The tattoo will indicate which vet did it and will be able to give you the owners name and phone number. If you can read the tattoo, I suggest calling your local shelter to see if they have a list of vets and the letters that they use to tattoo.

My humane society gets all their cats tattooed so it is easily recognizable that the cat is owned. My Puddles is tattooed too, but that was before microchipping. Have you tried goggling those letter part of the tattoo?

That sounds like the samel type of tattoo the dogs have from our original vet. Have you tried calling a vet to see if those are tat's from your province? If the cat came from a different province you may have a harder time tracking it down. Good luck.

Contact the Quebec Veterinary Medical Association and/or the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association they will have the book of codes for every vet/shelter in their province which will tell you who tattooed this cat and what year it was done, from there you can contact that vet/shelter & they will assist you in checking the individual animal number and contacting the owners.

The British Columbia VMA & the Alberta VMA post their tattoo code lists on their sites but it doesn't appear that Quebec & Ontario do, depending on how much this cat & it's family has traveled/moved in it's life it could be from farther out of province.

Good Luck

Yup you can track where it was done if you can find somewhere that compiles a list of tattoo abbreviations.

One of my cats, Mochie had a tattoo that read FWP 331. It stood for Feline Willow Park, which was the name of the clinic (Willow Park) that she was fixed at.

All provinces have their own way of coding. The letters represent the vet's office and the numbers represent the year the cat was spayed/neutured. At least that is how it works in Alberta. My cat had an Alberta Tattoo but got lost in Ontario so you may run into the problem of not being able to match the tattoo unless you are curious enough to go into another province. I remember calling my vet in Alberta 2x a month hoping that someone in Ontario would have figured it out...but no..never found her

so I have already spoken to the 4 different vets we work with and they all have the same reaction - as if I have two heads. is it possible we do not tattoo here in quebec? maybe this kitty is originally from another province. ?

G is the year and WR is from Weston ON and WM is London ON

phone for Weston is: 416-243-3200

phone for London is: 519-672-1210

You need the full tattoo to get an accurate location.

Good luck.

A SPCA in Quebec should have a Quebec tattoo registry.

This thread is like a mystery novel. L4H what great info! Brianna please let us know if you are able to track this kitties family. Sounds like he came originally from out of your Province. Even with that though, if his family has kept their Ontario vet informed you may be able to find them. Good luck.

wow!! thanks so much for that info!! I will definatly contact both numbers!

Here is why I am so intent on figuring out the mystery info on mr. kitty. He was dumped at our shelter this week, along with 2 other adult cats and 6 kittens. out of all of them, he was the only 1 sterilised...sooooo I am hoping that maybe he once got lost (or maybe stolen?) and his mommy or daddy have been looking for him. I just find it odd that an animal with some sort of id for tracking his owners would be dumped, instead of actually 'abandoned'. Wouldnt you be embarassed to throw out something with your name on it if you didnt want to be found?

i will keep you guys updated...if was really intended to be 'thrown out' then thats it, and we will find him a new loving home...but maybe someone is really missing him...

fingers crossed please!!

L4H - I just called both numbers you left for me, and neither tattoo, nor are they familiar with how to go about tracing a tattoo

Anyone have more suggestions for me?

You may want to try this site in case the original owners had registered their cat http://www.petlynx.net/index.php

I have say, wow, thanks so much for the effort you're putting into this .

Have you tried to google the tattoo number in quotations to see if anything comes up?

Those tattoo numbers were only for Ontario. I think cpeitra left a link to a listing in Alberta. Can you contact some vet offices in your area to find out about Quebec's tattoo policies. Normally it is the provincial vet association that would hold that info

Can you pm me the full tattoo number? The local HS really needed it in order to give accurate info.

Funny they stated they didn't tattoo because they are registered with the province as tattooing
