Red face Scary things for Diamond

Most of you know Diamond since we brought her home is a Skerrdy dog. Garbage truck is #1 But We have overcame alot of her trival things scaring her, (we worked through the outside ones

But The inside ones kinda have me Baffled.. eg last night my daughter had a giftbag by the kitchen entrance. Diamond was crying because she wanted to go into the kitchen & wouldnt cross the bag being there (I had to move it) & again today with a 6pack of beer my bro had put outside She wouldnt go outside again, I had to move it. I tried to call her to come to say kinda its ok but her ears were back & she was kinda shaking. & in the livingroom

Does anyone else have these issues? & how do I help her overcome her fears?I know the vacuum used to scare her as well but she has since got over that.

No idea how?

Our dogs get random "spookies" from time to time. Last week, Heidi was all up in arms, barking with her hackles up, over the xmas decoration I put on the door . Gracie does this often, with weird things like tarps or hay bales or large rocks in fields.

I don't make a big deal out of it, but neither do let them get away with the silliness. I take the dog over to the offending object, and cheerfully say "let's go say hi!" I touch the object and talk to the dog about it, then I let the dog investigate. Usually a few minutes of thorough sniffing is enough to convince them it's not a big deal. Heidi hasn't been bothered by the decoration since.

Try not to coddle or "awwwww, poor snookums" when she's spazzing over something. Stay upbeat and casual, like nothing's out of the ordinary. If she's really feeling spooked try to lure her over with a yummy treat or bring the object over to her with a treat.

I entertained the neighborhood at our old house one Christmas by introducing Evan, our sweet setter at the time, to a particularly Villainous looking Evil Christmas reindeer made out of logs. For some reason he looked at that thing and thought "". One day I started up the walk before he had a chance to realize what I was doing (normally, we'd just slink by on our walk), was halfway there and close enough to touch the thing if I let Evan sit at the end of the leash on the walk. Then I ignored Evan and 'got to know' Mr Reindeer. We had a great conversation with lots of laughs (I'm sure the neighbors really loved that ) and eventually Evan came up to say 'hi', too. A couple of sniffs, and all was well with the world.

He never paid any mind to it again. Dogs!

Was your mind in the gutter, DM?

I must admit though, he was a very attractive lawn ornament!

My girl Halo is a big coward. She had her hackles up at the wreath on a neighbours door the other night. She gets afraid of things mostly in the dark and won't approach until the older dog has checked it out. Then she'll slink over and sniff it from as faaaar away as possible - boy she can stretch her neck long! I encourage her to check things out whenever possible. At home she'll cry if Shadow is laying in the hallway and she is afraid to walk too close to her to get by. I don't know why she's afraid to squish past Shadow as Shadow lets Halo do and have everything she wants. But when Halo gets whiney about not going by Shadow I try to encourage her to squeeze by rather than make Shadow move. Yeah dogs can be pretty silly.

Wink

Tell Diamond that Kassie says there are lots of scary monsters out there ... Yeesh.

I mean, I'm used to this flight instinct because I have horses. And horses run away from things. But the dog is just ridiculous about it!

Kass is still edgy about the dishwasher and the washing machine ... if theres something 'loud' in the dryer, than Kass goes into full fledged heart failure over it ... Oh and the tv. If we watch anything that gets loud, really quickly? Ack. Kass runs from the room and hides.

My 1-year-old niece scared the living snot out of Kass at Christmas when Grandad was teaching her to pull tissue paper out of a gift bag. She wouldn't go near my niece for the next few hours because Kass decided she was a monster in a kid costume

And of course, the truck is a growling monster, as are the house cats when they are chasing rattly bits around the house ...

How do we treat it? If its something we can't control (ie rain/hail on the tin roof, thunder, etc) than we give her a shot of rescue remedy and she and I curl up on the floor together. If its something that we can control than I use clicker training and ask her to touch the object with her nose, or to sit quietly while I rustle the object.

Good luck to you and your scaredy dog

The only thing I've found that spooks Dracko is the sound of me throwing up. He slinks out of the room and hides downstairs. For a dog that literally never leaves my side it always amazes me that if I am sick and throw up I have to literally go and find him and convience him everything is okay and to come upstairs.

Obviously Diamond is interpreting these items as something else that must remind her of an incident in her past. Wouldn't it be good if we always knew what they were thinking.
