Question Vegetarian Poodle

Hello

I have been reading your posts for a while and decided to join.
I have a 4 yr old toy poodle (Brigid) who cannot eat meat. She gets a rash and constantly licks her privates. She is on the vet's vegetarian kibble, but she doesn't really like it. Does anyone know of another vegetarian dog food?

thanks

HI and welcome!

What kind of meat based dog foods have you tried? It may not be the meat content, but other ingredients in the food that are bothering your dog.

I have to agree with Lucky it is more likely an allergy to corn or soy which is pretty common. Why not try Natural Balance Duck and potato it is an excellent quality food and is now available at pet valu. No corn no soya and all human grade.

I have tried, chicken, lamb, beef based. dry and wet. If she eats treats made with any kind of meat, she'll lick.

It's really hard to get her a bone to chew on, any ideas?

Wysong, Natural Balance,Nature's Recipe and Natural Life all have vegetarian formulas - there's probably several other brands as well. They vary widely in quality too tho so check ingredients.

Thank you all for your valuable advice. I was tempted to try the duck but wasn't sure. As for the other links, they are american and do not sell to Canada. One of them do, but there is no stores in New Brunswick.

I will keep looking!

They are all sold in Ontario, Canada - could you ask your store to carry them?

OOPS!
sorry, I misunderstood your previous question re what kind of food. Medi-Cal and Techni-Cal, Dog Chow, Iams, Pedigree...

I can always ask the stores to see if they carry them. We only have a Pets Unlimited

thanks

None of the foods you listed are very good foods. With the exception of Medi-Cal and Techni-Cal (which I have not researched at all so I could be wrong) the foods you listed are full of fillers that are more likely your allergens. While it is uncommon for a dog to be allergic to a meat product, it is unlikely to be allergic to all meat products. Beef and chicken have little in common. Unless it is in the processing. Since Dog Chow and Iam use meat by products, that could well be part of the problem.

If you contact the manufacturers they can tell you who sells there foods and if not any of these can be ordered directly from the manufacturers or pet shops online. The duck and potato is an excellent quality food. The food you have tried are really all corn and by products in fact in some of them the first ingredient is corn which is all filler with no nurtional value, same with brewers rice it is only the hull you want brown rice.

The foods you have tried, particularly Pedigree, are loaded with corn and other cheap fillers which can certainly cause allergic reactions in some dogs.

I suggest you try a better quality food.

You can locate a store near you which sells the foods mentioned above by going to their websites.

You can try and find Wellness, which is an excellent and all natural food, by going HERE

Pedigree and the others, except for medi-cal and techni-cal were before we knew she was allergic to something.

I went on the site for Old Mother Hubbard. I have emailed them to see if they have a site I can buy from here in NB.

thanks for all the advice.

I use Hills Science Diet, they do a range of different foods for sensitive dogs, puppies, adults, senior etc.
I was told from our vets to mix in boiled brocolli and cauliflower, this fills them up and doesn't make them bloated. I often boil some chicken up with rice too.
I've just checked this webiste http://www.hillspet.com/index.jsp they do vegetarian food still.
Good luck with it. Also your vet should be able to suggest something.

I use Hills Science Diet as well, and it's excellent. Have you tried her on raw food?

I haven't read the rest of the posts here, but my father had a Dal with the same problem (well actually Dad didn't like the price of the vet's food )
So he came up with a mixture of steamed rice, a high quality extruded horse feed and fresh and cooked veggies (usually extra from what the humans ate for dinner)... The dog did well on that diet.

If you'd like to know more about that option (i.e. good horse feed and where to buy it), just ask - I can find a dealer in your area.

I will try the Hills diet, thanks for the link... they actually have a store here in my city that sells it.

When I asked my vet, they just say to keep her on their food. I tried her on a duck wet food last night, to see if she would have a reaction. Other than eating it in one gulp, she was fine. So, I think you guys were right, it's probably not all meat that affects her, but other fillers.

thanks again
