Oeskes my baby is 10 years and 9 months. Noticed bleeding from the nose (left nostril) 1st August, just trickles. Went straight to the vet and referred to a specialist for CT, confirmed Rhinocarcinoma.

She is on Metacam and I have put her on Sinu-Rite and just about to start Yannen, she is arthritic so the Metacam helps with that as well and seems happy in herself for the moment.

My question is how long? It has travelled to the Lymph Nodes in her neck. She is very snotty at the moment and unfortunately I am going away this weekend taking my daughter and her friend on a trip to Wales. But I feel sick leaving her in the hands of my friend who will have strict instructions.

This will be my first trip away with my daughter for two years due to financial constraints and I don't want to let her down. But I fear for my Ossie.

After reading all your experiences I think I trust you all enough to know you will tell me what's best to do!
I am so very sorry to hear this news. Have you looked at some of the supplement protocols that the other dogs have been on. Perhaps the most potent one might be the antibiotic doxycycline.

Wishing the best for you and Ossie

Osk has started bleeding a little more, no disfiguration and no problems in her mouth or ears.

Concern now is her sister who seems depressed and spending time upstairs next to our bed during the day and night which is unusual as they only do that when my husband is not home. Philly is eating and everything is functioning ok can only put it down to her picking up Osk's cancer. It's all getting a bit much!

Thanks for thinking of us Hazel and MaxaLisa! Yes, I hope Katie is doing okay still. Perhaps she just got busy and will check in at some point.

Haleyb, I am so sorry about your diagnosis. I hope that your Oeskes is doing well and that you were able to enjoy your time away.

I am not sure how long Oeskes may have. Your vet may be able to give you some kind of time frame but like Hazel said, I'm sure every case is different. My vet said as little as 5 months but she did not give me an "as long as" guess. I think it all depends on the type of nasal cancer and the aggressiveness of the tumor etc. Timber does not seem to be getting worse and does not have any nose bleeds so we might be dealing with a slow growing tumor at this point. All I can do now is to try keeping her as healthy as possible and her immune system strong by giving a good quality diet and trying different anti-tumor supplements listed in this thread.

What kind of dogs are Oeskes and Philly by the way?

They are German Shepherds. Osk is doing fine for now, Lymph Nodes haven't grown and the combination of drugs and remedies seems to be helping her. She gets a bit snotty at times which is red coloured but not free running blood, I think the Chinese herb is helping in that respect.

She still runs heartily for the ball nagging her niece Joy when she gets beaten to it by grabbing her neck or leg. I have been cheating by trying to throw the ball to Osk though!

Sorry about Timber, it's all rather sad

I am glad your Osk is still doing well! It sounds like he is still enjoying life and has some energy so that is a very good sign.

Yes, it is sad to think of them having cancer and possibly having their life shortened because of it but we just try to enjoy every moment with them. I wish they could live longer but I suppose it is not the quantity but the quality of life that matters.

The one supplement I always seem to go back to is lactoferrin. It seems to really help when Timber sounds stuffy. I take a break from it after I have finished a bottle of 60 caps because it is expensive but I think it really helps the mucous membranes. It is found in the lining of our digestive system and helps to fight infection. I think it works just as well as the doxycycline antibiotic.

SW, very interesting about the lactoferrin. I want to look into that one a little more!

I've recently been experimenting with microlactin as an anti-inflammatory after my girl has had a very good response to Answers raw goat milk. I've been feeling pretty good on the microlactin, and am now trying it on her.

I think that transfer factor and colostrum is too stimilating, at least from previous experience with me and my previous dogs. Do you know how the lactoferrin differs?

Update on Oeskes. She has improved health wise and I put it down to the supplements, she doesn't have any more nosebleeds which is definitely the Yannen. She 's full of life and still loves playing ball. I really thought she only had weeks but am more optimistic now for a bit longer.

How is Timber?

Hayleyb, so glad that Oeskes is doing better! That is great news that you were able to get the nose bleeds under control! Timber is doing very well. Her 13th birthday is coming up on the 10th. She is very happy because the weather is cooling down (although I am having a hard time adjusting to that and less sunlight) but being a husky, she can't wait for the snow to fall. I'm just glad she is around to experience another winter!

MaxaLisa, lactoferrin is a transport protein. I believe it is one component of colostrum. It is found in mucous membranes so that is why I wondered if it would be good with the nasal cancer. I think people general use it to prevent colds? It is an antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral. It general boosts the immune system and binds to iron which is why it is also an anti-tumor. I haven't been able to find any studies done where it has been used specifically in nasal cancer but thought I read something about colon cancer or maybe it was that it reduced polyps.

I give Timber 250mg once a day. Usually go through a bottle of 60 and then take a break. Haven't noticed any side effects. It really seems to help her stuffy nose so that's why I think it might prevent infection from building up around the tumor. It seems to be as effective as the doxy from what I have observed. This is the brand I am using:
http://www.aor.ca/products-page/lactoferrin-250/

I will have to look up microlactin. Do you use that as an immune booster?

Sorry MaxaLisa, you already said as an anti-inflammatory, so you are using it for joint problems?

Timber loves goat's milk! In fact, that was one of the only things she would consume when she was so sick with the tick disease. Not so fond of it myself.

Also thought I would mention there was a comment on Katie's facebook page dated Sept 14. Looks like she was still doing well at that time and no symptoms of the cancer in 8 months.

I just saw on FB that Katie celebrated her 11th birthday. So happy to see your dogs doing so well!!

I bought some lactoferrin to try, I'll try it first since I have a chronic stuffy nose, and see what it does I talked to Jazz's internal medicine vet, and he says that he hasn't seen a problem with it. I just don't want to increase any inflammation in her body, since I still don't know what's really wrong with her.

It's absolutely amazing how much the goat's milk is helping her. If I give it away from food, before bedtime, her stomach is nice and pliable and relaxed, and she feels so much better. Works even better if I give probiotics with it. I remember now it being used for Timber! I'm just fortunate that I stumbled across it here in town.

I've held off on the microlactin, and instead giving her something to supplement her choline supplies. I think that she is having a systemic problem with her nervous system, still trying to figure her out.

Hayley, what supplements are you giving?

SW, has Timber's tumor been palpated recently? I know some time ago you said that the vet thought it felt smaller. Wondering how the size is? I knew a dog with a tumor in his jaw, and it would vary in size, but stayed relatively the same size while he was on his supplements. It stayed that way for the rest of his life.....

No, I haven't had the vet back to feel Timber's tumor. I was wondering if I could reach back myself to monitor it's size but haven't tried yet. I did try to look with a flash light but couldn't see anything.

That's great that the goat milk has helped Jazz. I hope the lactoferrin helps as well. Let me know if you notice any results using it.

I have been trying the microlactin, and it does seem to help with aches and pains, but I worry about what it might do in a dog with infection. Always more questions than I have answers for

Sorry I haven't been on here forever! But Katie's still doing great! No signs of the cancer. we've backed off on some of the supplements, and haven't noticed any changes. And yes, Katie turned 11 in October, it's been just over a year since we noticed a few very minor nose bleeds and January will be 1 year since she was diagnosed with nasal cancer. Still don't know (and probably never will) if they mis diagnosed, if she's in remission or what- just enjoying the time we have with her!!

Our older dog Connor will be 14 in Jan. and he's definitely showing some signs of aging now. He likes to eat, but we can't keep weight on him for anything and his hips are getting weaker, but he still seems to have fun and doesn't seem to be in much pain, so same with him, we're just enjoying the time we have!

Glad you checked in Connor and Katie. Glad Katie is doing well! I hope we also hear an update from Hayleyb about Oeskes.

Timber is still fine. We just had the vet check her tumor and it is still the same size. Makes me wonder if they were right about the biopsy. I have experienced that they can be wrong because when she was about 6 we had a growth on her leg tested and they said it was an aggressive cancer which we had removed but the lump turned out to be a benign fibroma.

I am hoping they are wrong but if they are right, I am thankful it may be a slow growing tumor.

Our older dog just turned 15 in November and she is experiencing much hind end weakness like your Connor. Am thinking of starting a thread about it to see if I can get some suggestions to help her. Otherwise she seems like she is healthy overall. It is hard watching her body deteriorate.

Whatever the reason, this is great news. I think the things you initially did, even if right now you aren't keeping them up, must have helped.

A little off topic, but wanted to let everyone here know that we lost Connor yesterday. We already miss him terribly, but know that we made the right decision. Katie is still healthy- no signs of nasal cancer- and will be 12 in October. She seems to miss Connor already too. She's never been without him, so it may be hard on her.

So sorry about Connor. He was lucky to have had such a loving family.

I'm so sad to read this about Connor. It is tough to see them age and decline. I'm glad Katie is still doing well and hope she is adjusting to life without him

Hi,

Like others, my search for information on this topic lead me to this form. Thanks to everyone who has posted information and their story which has helped me deal with what is happening.

My 13 year old husky Sydney has been getting nose bleeds as well. It started about 6 weeks ago. She only had one so I didn’t think much about it. I figured she bonked her nose on something. Everything was good until last week when we started getting a couple a day. They have been getting worse every day since.

She has been to the vet who is fantastic an upfront about everything. He has given me some medication ( can’t remember what it’s called but it helps the blood clot ) for the nose which seems to be helping stop the flow. His recommendation is to have a rhinoscope as he cannot determine the cause or source of the bleeding. I’m trying to get her in for the procedure but there is only one vet in Winnipeg who does it and I won’t hear back for a few days.

Yunnan Baiyao has been mentioned here a couple times. Have those of you that have used it had good success with it stopping the nosebleeds? SuperWanda I see you are from Winnipeg, is there anyone in town that sells it or does it have to be ordered? Also what doses are recommended?

Other than the nosebleeds my girl is happy healthy and still has lots of life in her so I want to do what I can to maintain that.

I’m preparing for the worst (yet reading the success others have had here) hoping for the best.

Hi WestHawk,

I'm sorry Sydney is having some troubles. Timber had her scope done at Tuxedo vet. The vet's name escapes me. I think I was also told he was the only one that does this procedure.

I have never needed the Yunnan Baiyao but because Timber just had some drips of blood recently, I decided to pick some up. You can get it at Natural Healing Vet on Corydon. I see Dr. Linda Hamilton for our other dog who has hind end weakness but purchased this for Timber just to have on hand. It is over the counter so I don't think you need an apt. to purchase it. Maybe just give a call because she is the only vet there and believe she was heading out of town to a conference. It is $26 for 16 tablets. It says for a 15-30kg dog 2 capsules 2x daily. >30kg 2 capsules 3x daily. Not sure what dose others have used with success.

There is a blog I read about a dog with nasal cancer and I think he gave his dog a lower dose:
http://dognasalcancertreatmentforlucy.blogspot.ca/

Good luck at the vet and let us know how her scope went.

Superwanda, Thanks for the information. It is the Tuxedo Vet I'm waiting to see. My vet gave me a syringe of epinephrine to use as drops and so far it has stopped the nosebleeds but I'll hopefully have the scope done this week.

Hi WestHawk, I'm really worry that you are having such troubl.

I don't think I have much to add, though, having a husky, I would ask if the color of the nose has faded, or if there are any skin issues. Those are often signs of a greater need for zinc, which huskies do often have (nordic breeds in general), and zinc deficiency can cause greater infection, etc.

I've only used YB externally - i used it as a poultice. Well, I did use it internally, but there wasn't the right kind of bleeding to really say if it was effective, though, now that I think about it, I did eventually get the bleeding stopped, somehow. The leather part of my boy's nose would have little pinholes in it where it would just have blood spurting from it. When he died, he did have hemangiosarcoma, but he had it *everywhere* internally, so between the YB and the doxy and the other things, I guess I kept him going until he just couldn't go anymore

When his nose stuff started (and we still don't know exactly what it was), he was flushed out (vet didn't have a scope), and they couldn't find anything, but that made him a lot better for quite sometime. I really wish I would have had him scoped properly.

Best of luck to you with this!

Hi MaxaLisa,

Her nose hasn't faded and everything seems normal other than the bleeding. She had some elevated levels in her liver a couple of years ago but we changed her diet to one that was liver friendly and copper reduced and within about 6 months all her blood test were back to a normal range.

One thing does puzzle us and even seeing the vet he is not sure why she is getting a green circle of fur on her inner thighs near were she urinates. It's a green/yellow colour and does fall out but we are not sure the cause. It is starting to fade now but was much noticeable a couple of months ago. There is no indication of swelling or a discharge just some strange greenish looking fur.

Have you had a full blood panel and seen a copy of it yourself? Was a tick panel run? If so, what kind? Urinalysis? Urine culture?

I don't believe a tick panel was run, I'm back at the vet this week and will inquire. Thanks for the suggestion!

Keep us posted! I'm a fan of aggressively treating with doxycycline, since not all tick diseases show up on tests, and the spotted fevers, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis can all cause nosebleeds.

Do you get tested for heartworm because that includes tick disease (lyme, anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis although if it was done in the Spring, you can still get a tick disease at any point after that.

I'm not sure if you came across my other post with Timber (don't read it unless you have an hour to kill http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=73066) but before she was diagnosed with nasal cancer, she had anaplasmosis. At the time, there were not many cases in Manitoba so she went misdiagnosed and we almost lost her. That was mainly due to the fact they diagnosed it as an immune disorder and put her on heavy duty steroids and immune suppressants. She could not fight the tick disease and it was a grim situation.

At that point she had a very slight nose bleed but I am really not sure if it was due to the disease, undiagnosed nasal cancer or perhaps the metacam she was given but I guess we'll never know.

As far as I know, Manitoba has not seen ehrlichiosis here although they are obviously testing for it but lyme occurs in 12% of deer ticks tested and anaplasmosis <5%. The symptoms we experienced are nose bleed (?), low blood platelets, loss of appetite, lameness, fatigue.

That being said, I think getting the scope done is a good idea. If there really isn't anything to be seen you may want to ask about tick testing.

That's weird about the green fur. So you think it's being stained by the urine?
